Equipment VS Technique!!! Everyone Should Read

My best recordings to date were made on a a tired old Teac 3340, bouncing bass, drums and rhythm guitar from 3 tracks to 1 and then overdubbing 1 electric guitar for lead, a lead vocal and a harmony. We used a Peavey PA head, all dynamic mics and the reverb that was in the PA head. I think it...

    the spontaneous or the maticulous

I have always liked live recordings more: The Who - Live at Leeds Joni Mitchell - Miles of Aisles Yes - Yessongs Neil Young's "Tonight's the Night" falls into your alcohol or something fueled category. Even though they are pretty wasted by the last few takes, it is honest and real. That...

Reliability of ADAT vs. Laptop DAW for Live Recording

I want to record our band and other bands live. Although I have a Mac G4 with PT LE, I can't see dragging that whole desktop rig to every gig. So I need suggestions. I could get by with as few as 8 channels if I have to, but 12 to 16 would let me get better drum separation and the harmony...

    Shure SM 58

Everyone loves to bash this mic. If it works for you, pay no attention to the naysayers. I like the SM57 a little better than an SM58. The SM57 with a pop screen through an RNP sounds better on my particular voice than anything else I have tried, up to some ~ $500ish sounding condensers and...

Best Kick Drum Mic Under 200$

Which one of these has a natural EQ best suited for a kick in an acoustic based bands where the snare is played with brushes? Think "Fire and Rain" production. Thanks, bilco

I don't think Harvey thinks the T3 is a toy...... Frankly, if he thinks it's a good mic, that's all I need to know...... bilco

Sorry, missed that part somehow. I'll try them out on a guitar cab or on snare and tom. bilco

    Acoustic Guitar Condenser Microphone

I love my SM81; if you can afford a pair, they are good workhorse mics. Cheaper, but almost as good, in my opinion, would be a pair of the MXL 603s. I did a mic comparison on my Martin and the MXL 603s came in a close 2nd to the SM81. The KSM 109 I tried was kind of brassy compared to the...

    Upgrading Acoustic Recording

Get a 2nd MXL 603 for the guitar and record in X/Y stereo. That is a good mic. I borrowed one and it worked very well. I ended up buying an SM81 which is nice, but in retrospect, I should have bought a matched pair of the MXL 603s. Stereo acoustic guitar is awesome. bilco

Anyone know any popular folk songs recordings with singer/songwriter syndrome?

I think Don McLean's "American Pie" was recorded that way. I remember reading about what they had to do to get separation, but I don't remember the details or where I read it. bilco

    General Custer's mic

How many times do we have to tell you, the problem wasn't in the mic!! If he'd only had a GOOD preamp and converters, THEN we'd be talkin' a whole different page of history. The US Army just kept settling for those budget preamps....... I think they were Buffalinger....

Vocal Recording: 1 take vs. punch-ins?

A couple of things come to mind..... I love my wife and on some things she is my biggest fan and supporter, but she has hated several songs I've written and in some cases I just put them away, intending to never play them out live. Eventually I did play them and guess what? They get some of...

Vocal Recording: 1 take vs. punch-ins?

I'm not opposed to punching in at all and with PT LE, it's pretty easy to do. I just haven't done it. I am trying to engineer and sing at the same time. I have the vocal mic setup on the other side of the room, so I start the track recording and then run over to the mic behind the partition...

Vocal Recording: 1 take vs. punch-ins?

I can't believe the timing of your posts. It's like you've been reading my mail. I took the day off from work to lay down vocal tracks and took time to get the mic and room setup just right. I did about 4 takes of 4 different songs and they all just suck. It really makes me wonder why I...

    MXL- 603S Experience?

I borrowed a 603S from a friend to record acoustic guitar before I bought an SM81. I think it is a great mic.
