    ~$300 for a bass amp

i have a friend who has one. it's a solid amp. had no trouble being heard over drums, guitar and keys.

    "Second line" rhythym?

most drummers can't explain what second line is all about. i've never read a decent description of "second line" in modern drummer (or anywhere else) and i've read almost every issue for going on 20 years. and yet, george bush thinks he knows enough about it to include it in his katrina relief...

    Octabans

clever idea. i used to want to put together an all roto tom kit (well, except for snare...roto snare would be awesome, though), but never could find the big roto toms. now that i gave up on the idea i see big roto toms all the time.

    Octabans

they sound cool, but they're like a gong. how often are you going to use them? and , do you really want to carry them around from gig to gig?

    Strat or Tele?

led zeppelins first album is all tele. teles are surprisingly versatile.

    Buying a bass drum

i have a 20x14 that sounds so good people try to buy it from me. edit: and it's a cheap-ass '60s Pearl made of super crappy wood.

    What is better?!

actually, yes i prefer dance music with real drums (funkadelic, for instance). i don't like techno or industrial music at all, if that's the dance music you're referring to. in my opinion, digital or electronic drums sound terrible in every setting i've heard, even when played by drummers...

    Which tele?

another MIM question: i just realized the made in mexico telecasters don't have strings that pass through the body. is this the case for all telecasters made in mexico? do all american teles have string through body design? is this a cost cutting measure? and finally, how does the sound...

    Displaying guitars at home, suggestions.

not sure this is what you have in mind, but here's a product that holds your guitar horizontally, which probably supports it better than a floor stand or the typical wall hanger that holds the guitar by the headstock...

    Most Overrated/Overpriced Electric Guitars

someone once mentioned to me that vintage guitars got so expensive so quickly because japanese collectors started paying huge money. seems believable. is there any truth in that theory?

    increasing kick projection

you still might need to go bigger if the previous suggestions don't help. maybe a wooden beater would be a good first step.

    increasing kick projection

you probably need a bass drum bigger than 20" for the music you're doing.

    First Bass

i have an SX also. it's a jazz bass copy. it seems pretty solid. i probably need to get it set up, though. before that i had a squier jazz bass. it was one of the nicer squiers, probably as nice as a meixcan fender jazz. it only had one problem. the first fret, e string buzzed no matter...

remo drum head names: diplomat: thin one ply ambassador: one ply, the basic all purpose drumhead emperor - two diplomat plies pinstripe - two ply with muffling material around edges fiberskyn - fake calfskin that's all you really need to know about remo.

    Gibson Faded SG?

i was just in vancouver. guitar prices seemed REALLY high. nothing worth owning for less than $1000 canadian. i only looked in one store, though, so maybe they were overpriced.

building my own (slightly unusual) drumset

nah, it was easy...and free (well, except for the price of replacing my worn out drill bit). i just drilled two holes per side for the strings that hold the wires in place. finding a 13" set of snare wires was the hard part (it'd probably be easy to find them online, but i wanted an excuse to...

$250,- budget for an amp. Any suggestions?

those are $399 new. maybe you could find a used one for $250. how about a peavey classic 30? i've heard those sound nice, but i haven't played one. i think those might be in the $200-$300 range.

building my own (slightly unusual) drumset

that's an excellent idea. the only problem is that 14" depth is a long way for air to travel in order to set the snare wires in motion. still, it's worth trying. i have turned a 13" tom into a snare and it worked pretty well. i had to get a shorter set of snare wires and drill holes in the...
