Are Blue microphones really that good?

I haven't used blue microphones too extensively, and I know they're GOOD, but many people seem to think they are the best mic's out there. When I use/hear them, it just seems like they have a lot of treble that makes them kind of shimmer, and people interpret that to be "good" cause the...

Mics: more of an obsession than a real difference?

Mic quality: -durability -sensitivity -frequency range -frequency response -engineered correctly So yes, some mics are better than others, because you can have a brick of a mic that picks up a frequency range of 20hz to 21khz and is tailored to accentuate the best parts of instruments or...

    Doubling Guitar

So when you record distorted rhythm guitars, its almost always a good idea to double the tracks and pan them to make the guitar big and powerful. however, in a live application, is there a way with one guitar player that you could simulate some of these effects? possibly like a vocal doubler...

    "Processed" Vocals

So when people hear processed, robot vocals, what is going on? I mean obviously they're using auto tune, heavy gating, reverb, etc. But something gives it that shimmer that I cant seem to figure out. Is it excessive doubling? Or phasing? The reason I ask is because a little of that effect can...

    Can't get a good tone. :(

no reverb on rhythm guitars, by the way. it makes them wishy washy and you need them to be punchy.

    Can't get a good tone. :(

you aren't too far off thats not horrible. you're getting close. also, what I'm about to tell you is based off of only my trial and error experience. other people may disagree. First of all, is there a bass guitar in that mix? cause thats mixed pretty badly... its washing out everything else...

    headphones for mixing

I use headphones all the time Look, obviously monitors will give you the best mix, but if you think about it, where do people listen to music now-a-days? on a home stereo system? yeah, right. lol. its on crap ipod headphones or in their car. Especially if your market is 13-30 year old people...

5 Things Wrong with Rap Music

...you don't listen to hip hop then Please go listen to Atmosphere and Aesop Rock and then tell me that rap sucks for those 5 reasons. There is GOOD hip hop on this planet. The trendy radio shit can go to hell. Cunninlinguists, Zion I, EMINEM even does NOT fit the mold you described, except for...

    Up front, powerful mix

that actually makes a lot of sense. i've found that up close instruments seem closer when you have contrasting images that seem farther away (less treble, more verb, etc). And yeah the rooms I've recorded in aren't great. I'll try more open rooms, farther/closer mics etc.

    Up front, powerful mix

I'm assuming this has to do with the recording/mic technique, but it is possible this should go in the mixing category. When I record something, it sounds pretty good. But then I listen to a pro recording.... Everything in the pro recording feels closer. Like, my mixes/recordings are coming...

    Home Recording's Dirty Little Secret

making a radio quality song is not hard per se. Learning how to do it, however, is nearly impossible.

    Recording soft vocals

This is more of advice than a question. If you are a singer, you have to sing into the recording microphone differently than you would just jamming in your bedroom. Be conscious of your pops (b's and p's, etc) because, despite the pop filter, some will get through. Thats just general advice...

Mic options for powerful male rock vocals? (ex. Aaron Gillespie style)

I don't really have a suggestion. I think mic technique is important tho. Try standing a good 2 feet away from a microphone without using a pop filter and see how that sounds. Then try getting up on the mic like you're at a live show. Chances are you could get some booms and pops but you could...

    Need help with Bass tracks

Make your EQ flatter than you expect it should be. Also, the difference between 80 hz, 100 hz, and 120 hz, is HUGE. they all resonate very differently. Try messing with those. They give their own unique rumbles. Thumbs up to direct in. Also, use a series of gentle software limiters if you want...

    My Mix is Dead

So this is a general thread for the dilemma "Why does my mix just feel... dead? dull?" I have had this problem recently, and have come up with some advice. I would also like people to share their stories to help others with their carcass of a song. Key points to avoid this problem: -Never...

    computer speakers as moniters

Okay my DAW is Logic 9. My operating system is.. snow leopard? i think? So is there a way to change the output of the TASCAM to go through the computer instead of the monitor outputs? I'm gonna get adapters but i'd still like to know for future reference. I usually mix via studio headphones...

    computer speakers as moniters

I am using the Tascam US1800 to record. After I record I can play back what I recorded through my computer speakers, but I cant hear anything WHILE I'm recording... essentially, they aren't working as monitors. the headphone jack on the tascam works just fine... but i don't have any monitors...

Solid State Combo Amp going BZZZZBOOMSLAHGHG

This is a recording website... but i figured I'd pick your brains before i go make another user account for an amp repair website or something. I've got a Fender Frontman 212r. two 12 inch speakers, 100 watts. Solid state. Anyway, when driving this thing to hell at high volumes one day...
