It's good for metal and is (quality wise) better than any LP I've ever played, but if you aren't looking for a hard metal sound it may not be worth it. EMG 81s are probably the best pickups I've ever used and you can great sound from it but it would really help to know your style to say yes or no.

ESP make some great guitars that will definately play Death Metal well. Although your choices are limited with that price range there are some good Ibanez and ESP guitars that will be great for metal. I'd also suggest you look into BC Rich guitars which are good for metal and (in my experience)...
