Yeah as for guitars we have been able to get some awsome sounds from guitar amps in the same room. So maybe you are right about it not being the ceiling height.

Also if you have drumagog you can get a pretty good results with an ordinary sounding compressor/gate. I have a really cheapy gate that I use on snare and kick and it does the job perfectly for drumagog. basically the less bleed you have the better the results if you are relying on the drumagog...
I have an older AT model called a pro9 kick mic. must have been the model before the 25?? not ever been able to find out much about it, but got it 2nd hand for like $40.00 . this thing sounds great on kick and guitar amp. even can do a decent jobs on vocals.
