Well, after some more research I'm thinking of either the AT4050 (since I really like my AT3035) or the KSM44. I'll be doing mostly solo acoustic stuff (like Kottke tunes and stuff). I'm leaning toward the AT4050.
My bigger question is can I use any mic for the mid of an MS setup or is there any...
I've decided I need a mic that will do figure 8 so I can do MS stereo recording. I've been wanted the Shure ksm44 for a while but I'm wondering, what are the most popular multipattern mics around here?
And how important is it to match mics for the MS technique? Should I go with a SP B3 to match...
The noise is definitely the minidisc. I've been playing with it more today and it works really well. I just record a few seconds without the mic on for a noise sample and then used CoolEdit to clean it up and it sounds pretty good. I really like the MS stereo sound, it gives a nice 'space' to...
Well, I picked up the Sony ECM-MS907. It's a bit noisy with my old MiniDisc MZ-R50 but I think it's going to be good enough for what I'm doing. I'm going to play with it this weekend and maybe post some samples on my website. It'll be nice, now I can just throw in a blank disc and record my...
I have an older MiniDisc recorder (walkman) and I'd like to start using it for live recording, like small get togethers and random song ideas. I'm looking at the Sony mics but don't know which one to choose? I've been thinking of either the ECM-DS70P or the ECM-719.
Anyone have suggestions?

I just finished another amateur budget mic shootout. This time using an acoustic (a Lowden O25).
Mics used:
SP B1, SM57, AT3035, MK012, MXL 603S and V67G.
Through a DMP3 into a Yamaha AW16G.
Take a listen and let me know what you think.

For $160 you can pick up a new M-Audio DMP3. It helped me get a better sound into my AW16G (which even has phantom power). It's considered a respectable budget preamp. $80 a channel.
My dad got me a contact this week of someone who works at a local studio. He said I might be able to swing by and sort of hang out for the day and shadow them to see what a "real" studio feels like. I'm hoping it works out because I'd be really interested in taking a day off and hanging out...
I have the buying bug again and I'm thinking about a couple new additions to the recording gear. Another mic and another preamp. I'm thinking of upping my signal chain a little bit by getting an RNP. I'm also thinking of getting an NT1-A. The RNP I feel pretty good about but I haven't seen too...
I really liked how the V67 sounded from the tests. It had a nice crisp sound to it. I think it would work well with the MK012 (like many folks have suggested here). Amazing how different it sounded 3 inches further away. Just reinforces how important placement is. I liked the 603 too (nice and...
I did a few mic tests today with my new classical and the mics I currently own to see which one I liked best. If you're bored, give a listen and rank them or let me know which one you think sounds best. I was surprised which one I thought sounded best. I'm going to do this again when I get my SP...
I ordered myself a Studio Projects B1 (with shockmount) from Full Compass the week before Christmas along with some other mics. It was on backorder so cool I'd wait a little bit. They still haven't sent it yet. Grrr. I've called twice now and they say they'll be in on the 26th so I should have...
What a difference this technique makes. I've been struggling with getting my acoustic guitar recording not to sound so muddy. I tried this and now they're starting to have the clarity I've been looking for. Definitely a good tool to have in the toolbox.
These are great mics. I do have a single cardiod MK012 (which is nice), but I like these better. I was surprised at how quiet they are and how much they pickup. I'm running them through a DMP3 into my AW16G.
Here's something I put down with them last night.
Taylor 414K (with sort of old strings)...
My Christmas gifts to myself are arriving. My V67G came last Friday and I just got my pair of 603S's this afternoon (can' t wait to go home and play with them). I haven't recorded too much with the V67 yet but I will say it looks cooler in real life than in the pictures. Quite bright gold...
I've been doing a lot more recoding lately (practicing at least) and I feel the need to buy a few more mics. Currently, I have a pair of SM57s, an MC012a (cardioid) and an AT3035. I'm looking to add a couple more LD condensers (the SP-B1 and MXL67G). Eventually, I'd like to buy a couple...
Technically, I guess the one I have would be called the MC012a (the single cardiod capsule). I bought it from GC before I knew you supposed to buy them in pairs and before I knew they came with 3 capsules. I was just in the store and I was going to buy an SM57 (which I got later) and they had...
