    Preamp for ribbons?

Which Preamp I have a bank of Fairchild 692's that are spec'd at +68dB. I also use API 312s, which are JOYOUSLY quiet. I haven't seen any 629s other than the eight that I have, but I'm sure they're out there somewhere. Any high-quality pre should have a relatively low noise at high gains...

Essay Contest for a Shure 330 ribbon mic

Mic Here's a quick clip from this week's session done between tracking.. A quick improv jam. All tracks are done through the Shure 330. You can hear all 68dB of gain coming out of my Fairchild pre. I reverbed the heck out of the final to try to get rid of a stinky snare sound. Drums played by...

Essay Contest for a Shure 330 ribbon mic

Marik Sounds like Marik is the go-to guy for ribbons... I've seen him on the Prodigy forums. Marik, do you have a website? I'd love to know if all of your ribbon knowledge is collected in one spot! I don't think I'd toss the ribbon... The less work the better, and re-ribboning is not easy for...

    Microphone Reality Check...again

Acoustics I agree that the purity of the sound source is the most important - followed by the acoustics in your mixing area.

    Octava Mk-012s VS AKG C1000s

C1000s C1000s = I've heard them sound OK on cymbals. The real winner is the Oktava, although I have a MXL603s that is great sounding for the price range.

Essay Contest for a Shure 330 ribbon mic

Frequency Plotting Your frequency graphs are much more user friendly than my Cool Edit Pro graphs! I don't seem to have that much control over zooming, etc. All I get is 'log' or 'linear' graph. :( I always get caught with my face three inches from the monitor while trying to frequency...

Essay Contest for a Shure 330 ribbon mic

Alter Ego Only if you pay me royalties  I do have some thin thin silver foil. If I ever get good at cutting this 1um stuff maybe I'll give it a re-ribbon. Right now, I'm seriously doubting that I'll get good at cutting the 1um stuff. A Question: How do you ascertain that it is...

    The cost of building mics?

Capsule The capsule is the hard part... Everything else is pretty cheap aside from any transformers you are going to use.

    Vocals and Headaches...

Singing It's funny... I've gotten almost every band I've produced from classic jazz, black metal, and vintage rock reunion bands to start rapping as a vocal warmup. ;) If you're into yoga, look up "the lion pose." That's a good preliminary warmup, it really opens up the blood vessels in and...

For Sale Nokia 8801 For $400

    Pulsar-tech mic cables

Pular Tech My Pulsar Techs are gold plated, which I was looking for. They sound good. I rarely move them from mic to mic so I never even noticed if there was any problem with the connectors.

    Vocals and Headaches...

Yelling I've found that it helps to sing the songs alone to get a feel for them. Then try to take that feel to a band setting. That USUALLY prevents the yelling thing. Yes, I've had severely blown blood vessels in my head in the past.

A cool picture .. do you have one?

My Studio Some older studio pics. This is from the first incarnation of my studio which was all crammed into an 8x10 bedroom. I've moved up to a 14x12 bedroom for the drums and a 12x10 control room :D I used to put plastic bags over my mics to keep the smoke out. The bagged victim in the...

Behringer C-2 Pair or NADY CM90's

Behringers I got a pair of the Behringers. This was recorded ONLY with the Behringer C2s. That means that EVERY track was an XY pair of Behringer C2 mics through a Studiomaster Diamond mixer. No they don't have the same resolution as the higher end mics, and a well-trained ear can pick out the...
