    Tool acoustic cover

I sing backups on the last track of the "Tallman, Mechanism" CD which I have seen on Napster. The track is called "Beneath the Killing Floor" and was produced by Sylvia Massey Shivy (the producer who broke tool). That was a commercially supported recording with other musicians playing their...

    Tool acoustic cover

I'm not a huge fan of the ultramaximizer either. I haven't tried it for some time, but I remember hearing unfriendly sounding distortion when I pushed it. Someone later informed me that there was a patch for a math problem in one version, but i haven't gone back to try it again.

A different kind of mix contest

It might be the "secret sauce" I'm looking for. I routinely compress bass heavily, but your console might just have much nicer sounding compressors! My roomate has a SansAmp. I might play around with that. Thanks.

    Tool acoustic cover

Thanks man. Any suggestions on a good limiter? Everything I try sounds like crap. Right now, I'm going through magneto, then a re-eqing, and then magneto again. I can push it harder, but it starts to sound like crap in the loudest parts.

A different kind of mix contest

Blue Bear.. I have some specific questions about your mix. 1. You bass tone is very smooth. How did you effect it? Is it just EQing and compression? 2. The backup vocals have some distortion above 5k, but it is very pleasant sounding. Is that intentional? Is it an EQ boost, or some sort of...

    Tool acoustic cover

This is a home recording done with plug-in acoustic guitars. I'm doing an acoustic tool cover show at Holy joe's on the 13'th, and I am trying to make a recording that the club can play periodically to increase interest in the show. I would appreciate any criticism on the mix. I'm hoping to...

Check out some of my home recordings, please

you've got to pick and choose who and what you listen to on these threads. You'd do yourself a disservice to ignore all of the negative comments, but you'd also do yourself a disservice to take to heart negative comments -- specially if you feel that the person giving them just doesn't like the...

Check out some of my home recordings, please

I liked it. I didn't have a problem with the one-mic drums. To me, it sounded intentionally lo-fi. i wouldn't have known if you didn't tell me. I'm listening at very low levels and with a fair bit of background noise, so just like the negative comments, take them for what they're worth...

Please make me your little beeyatch.

Thanks! Out of curiosity, did you listen to the first mix, or the one posted halfway down this thread? Unfortunately, the effects on the first guitar come from the rig, although i can probably suck some of them out with EQing. I think the second mix will sit a bit better on your stereo Here's...

Oh also, regarding convulsion. I've really enjoyed playing with SIR, but I don't have the processor power to use it in a real mix. Heh.. I barely have the processor power to play with it. I usually have to overclock my machine for half an hour to do my final mixes. Thanks for the suggestion...

Please make me your little beeyatch.

Thanks for all of the critique. It's never too late to re-record, and I might take some of your suggestions regarding the "muddy" guitar. As much as I liked the tone individually, I'm having trouble getting it present in the mix without screwing everything else up. In answer to your question...

Please make me your little beeyatch.

I'm on the Tallman album "Mechanism".. just the last track (beneath the killing floor). It's hard to find these days. Thanks. I'll post some more stuff later. It's mostly very different. I'm just trying to find a new style, and practicing mixing right now, since I'll have to do my next album on...

Please make me your little beeyatch.

Thanks guys. I've done a remix that deals with some of the issues. I'll post it later if anyone wants to hear it. It also includes some better drum fills and minor production changes. Thanks.

Here's another one for anyone who cares to cut it up. Comments on the good and bad are welcome, but the bad are probably more useful. JAKE, Here is the friggin mp3! This one is more dark, and is probably only uplifting to the suicidal, so be forewarned.

    Hard...............

Mic positioning on toms is important. The trick I use is to imagine pinstripes on the heads, and point the mic, less than an inch from the top pinstrip, to the opposite pinstripe on the bottom head. You get the whole sound of the drum that way. Kick drum mics (if you only have one) can be...

    Laid back rock tune

I guess I'm comparing myself to my favorite recordings, but it's also an unfair comparison -- worlds top producers on the worlds best studio rigs vs. me in my bedroom. But doesn't everyone want to sound like the worlds top producers? I just don't like to blame the rig. I'm going to burn off a...

    Laid back rock tune

It's all me. I was actually worried cause it goes out of tunes in spots, but it was more of a rough take and I've learned to leave imperfections alone, unless they sound wrong. I'm selling the song to some pretty-boy after I deliver it to my GF. Might as well give it to someone who can make...

1st recording /mixing at home studio

I think the "crying" rapper style makes it more interesting. It would be even better if i could hear him. Turn him up methinks. Choose the best 3 minutes of lyrics and drop out the rest. Maybe drop a bass line and some samples periodically to give it more development.
