Not to discourage you, but I'd suggest that if you don't have a decent knowledge of the gear, you might want to learn a little more before you start recording bands. Maybe work with someone else for awhile until you get to know the gear and what it can do.

Definitely test out the A-8. I've used one for years and it produces very good results. However, if they have problems they are monsters to repair. So I agree with the advice to get it well checked out. If you have a dud, it will give you no end of grief.
