    Help Me Start Recording

Not to discourage you, but I'd suggest that if you don't have a decent knowledge of the gear, you might want to learn a little more before you start recording bands. Maybe work with someone else for awhile until you get to know the gear and what it can do.

    Really good Wireless mics?

Bad news Robbypoo, I have to agree with Cave Dweller. Buy a cheap FM mic and you'll regret it--it simply won't hold up to performance demands. Been there done that, got the T shirt.

pitch shift - how do I get rid of every bit of my real voice??

Are you plugged directly into the Microverb or are you feeding it from the board (aux send)? If the latter, and if you turn the output from the Microverb all the way down (even turn the unit off) do you still hear your (real) voice? If so, it could be coming in from somewhere else on the...

    16 track reel to reels..

I've used a Fostex A-8 for 5-6 years now and like others on this topic can get a jaw-dropping sound out of it. A lot of it has to do with your recording technique. Experiment until you learn how hard you can hit the tape. I slam everything on there well into the reds and it comes back clean...

    Note bending on an Acoustic

Bending technique is another issue. If you bend with only one finger you'll probably have a problem. Esp on acoustic I'll bend with three fingers scrunched up together. Also make sure you have your thumb locked over the neck so you can use the strength in your hand and wrist, not just fingers. I...

    What is 'class A'?

Class A is used mainly in high end electronic amplifiers or preamplifiers. Tha main idea, simplified...A sound wave has a peak and a valley. In a class B amplfier one part of the electronics amplifies the peaks and another the valleys. This is efficient but it also creates some distortion where...

What gear to I need to learn playing guitar the death/black metal way?

Great questions, rancor. Keep asking them and your learning curve will rise rapidly indeed! Lots of good advice above, but one additional point I'd like to make. When you look for a cheap new or used guitar (and I've helped numerous starters do just that), I've found that the thing often...

    General Mixing / Mixdown Question

I'd agree to a certain extent with "do whatever sounds good" but there's a caveat to that--there'a a number of things that wouldn't make sense. For instance, you probably would't want to pan everything to mono, pan the entire mix left or right, pan the bass off centre, eq the entire mix so it...

    Question about a Fostex A-8

It'll play back fine on the R8 but I don't know about the M80 (is it 1/4" or 1/2"?). (The A8 can only record up to 4 tracks at a time but it can play back all 8, as can the R8). Both run same bias, same speed (15 ips). Someone else is considering an A8 here so if they don't want it you might...

    Good lyrics? Judge me

My thoughts, Liquid Len--seems to me the point is you helped this guy pull the trigger--you (the narrator) are saying you have some responsibility for his death. OK, so where does it go from there. We need more of the story. Did you cheat him, rob him, bed his wife, feed him bad dope, what? Or...

Newbie's question on some used gear

Definitely test out the A-8. I've used one for years and it produces very good results. However, if they have problems they are monsters to repair. So I agree with the advice to get it well checked out. If you have a dud, it will give you no end of grief.

    Hello, all! And a question.......

Dan, definitely NOT a stupid question! My experience is the technology is usually a lot stupider than we are. Just that fact that we constantly need to be concerned about compatibilities and obsolesence, not only among but within brands, tells me there is something very stupid going on out...

    Recording a Guild Jumbo

David, I'm nervous about putting a microphone close to my ear as it might pick up the voices in my head. Gloryyyyy!!! [This message has been edited by Tapehead (edited 06-28-2000).]

"Wait" -- I think this is final, just want to check

Terrific piece of work all around. The recording is so transparent that the music gets through with no impediments. That's what it's all about. A reminder for all of us that, yeah, gear is important, but more than anything it's what we do with it and how much we communicate through our music...

    Guitar recording

You might want to try micing the amp instead of taking a direct signal out. You'll probably like the sound a lot better. As for guitar processors, that can include "stompbox" type foot pedals, multiple effect processors, etc.--take a look in a music store and if they do guitars at all they...
