Hi folks, I'm new to this forum (I was refered here by a helpful soul at the TDPRI Telecaster forum), but I'll probably be spending a lot of time here if I buy this gear--this seems like a good place!
I met a guy who's selling an old Fostex A-8 1/4" 8-track tape machine and a Tascam M-308B mixing console (both are analogue), $300 for both. They look old but appear to be in working condition. I really don't know much about these, but the price seems like it it might be a good deal and a cheap way to get into home recording. Has anyone used either of these, are they any good, does the price seem fair? Any feed back is greatly appreciated.
Thanks a lot, folks!
Cheers--
Cliff

"Appear to be in working condition"

Make sure you get that stuff checked and re-checked. Although there are some who would never trade their tape, Analog is also VERY expensive (tapes, maint.). Check out last issue of Recording magazine www.recordingmag.com (I think). Lots to know about calibration and stuff.

You may also want to check out the Analog Only forum.

Thats a very good deal if it all works... Find a guy at a local music store who will put it through its paces for, say, $20...
Tell the guy you will buy it if it checks out...
If he doesnt agree, then write him a check and take the gear to the music store and get the tech to try it out... (Right then and there... Most music store techs will have time for this...)
If it doesnt work... call the bank and cancel the check...
If he wont take a check and refuses to let you get the gear checked out...
Dont buy it.

Definitely test out the A-8. I've used one for years and it produces very good results. However, if they have problems they are monsters to repair. So I agree with the advice to get it well checked out. If you have a dud, it will give you no end of grief.
