    Patchbay Width Question...

I just recently re-did my patch bays (for the 4th time...sigh) Initially I had them evenly placed on each side of the mixer/monitor/keyboard area. A few (those i deemed as most used) were placed facing up through the desk (and an angle) and those I didn't use as much mounted horizontally down...

    synching to DAW?

I have a TSR8 (works great) and I have a Digi002R I've looked at the PP2 unit for synching, but it only has midi connections. The TSR8 has a RS232c (which as best I can tell is the midi "port" used for synching it I have found one of the Tascam MTS30 synch unit... but no pics of the back to...

...maybe they think it was me?!? Have you had any involvement with TAXI? I'm seriously thinking about taking the couple hundred buck plunge for next year- been slowly working on assembling a small 'catalog' of tunes (mine, collabs, and by others)- I have someone who's willing to buy the...

    Quitting

Today is just exactly one of those days.... it's all sounding like shit and the more I try to fix it the worse it gets.... I'm not ready to sell and bail, but the thought fleetingly passed thru me! My wife ( a charcoal and acrylic media artist) tells me it's all part of the artistic process...

    Record everything onto reels??

Well I have no answers, but i'd be very intersted if anyone has a way of synching a PTLE set-up with a R to R. I have a Fostex G-16, however I record most everything thru an 002R and a DigiMax (16 tracks simultaneous). I 've used the Fostex a few times, and while transfering the tracks is easy...

PRS CE or Gibson SG Standard?

My vote is PRS- yeah more $$$ but they hold their value (and tuning) The bolt-on's are a bit "brighter" tone wise, but I personally like the setnecks (I play a C24.... owned a McCarty, a 22, and a HB1... like the 24 more) 10 tops don't sound any better, but from a resale perspective... way to go

Guitar loud and in your face...

I'm on PTLE/002R I've found the best sound is a SM57 off axis at the speaker and a second SM57 about 4' back level with the speakers. My condensers OL and I find the dynamics more forgiving from powerchord saturation

    Soundcard and Headphone Question

I like the Behringer HA4700 4 outs, each has a treble/bass/level.insert mix, and can be mono's (throws some people to have to record to a stereo mix) and a mute. Not a big fan oof Behringer, but these work well... a little noisy at higt levels, but hopefully you have OK headphones.

    Post fader levels

now that's what I have been doing, but a number of folks (elsewhere, other forums... as well as an aquaintance (can't quite call him a friend)) suggest lower levels to leave room for EQ boost, Compression, Reverb/delay, etc) with their logic being that headroom is needed for the mastering...

    drum recording

I use a pair of MXL 991's for my overhead. really happy with them (and the work great for top end of acoustic piano and fretboard on an acoustic guitar. I got mine as part of a $99 combo with 990's a while back,so I'm guessing they're very affordable... check out e-Bay

Head/cab vs combo... whats the benefit?

Separately Heads and cabs are lighter! Aside from weight there's no real sound advantage (IMO) as you can change the speakers in your cab or combo, or add another cab (yeah it weighs more, but cosmetically speaking.... awesome!!! seriously- open backs tend to push more mids and highs, closed...

Any thoughts on how this set-up sounds? improvements?

Sound is much more than your hardware. Hardware IS important; what kind of mic, preamps, etc, but the room also plays a big role. Are you in a garage ? a bedroom? The cables (unless they're complete crap) play little into the equation. need more info

What to charge someone for studio time?

By the hour! and have a minimum block of time (4 hours) so people don't waste YOUR time! $8.00 / hour.... come on, people at Mickey-D's make more than that! You've invested in the equipment and you/re providind a space. $100 minimum (4 hours) which is still a bargain no matter how you slice...

    Mic Questions

The Shure SM57 is a good instrument mic. Works well for screaming vocalists.. Condensers vary- Pencils are good for drum overheads, acoustic pianos, string instruments (vioin, viola, cello etc) The large diaphragm and ribbom mics are very sensitive- great for trained/experienced vocalists and...

    Technicaly Challenged - Help!

It would also help to know if you play an instrument/sing or want to get into MIDI. You'll need a decent microphone(it makes a difference) , headphones (preferable to computer speakers)... do you play guitar/keyboards? seems like a lot of questions, but then again there's no simple answer
