I want to record absolutely everything I do onto an tascam 38, 8 track 1/2" reels. I have a digi 001 and I dont really want to transfer anything into protools until I have a mix system or at least a digi 002(I record onto reels regardless of what protools I got). I dont want the hassles of syncing with my current digi 001 or even just dumping the audio without sync into protools as it is currently set up, whats your opinions on recording a everything onto my reels(witch sound so good!!) until I get the $$ for a mix or 002? I am mainly into alternative(rob thomas, sheryl crow, etc....) and metal(staind, slipknot, korn) very different genres indeed but I still need help!! any Ideas?

Well I have no answers, but i'd be very intersted if anyone has a way of synching a PTLE set-up with a R to R. I have a Fostex G-16, however I record most everything thru an 002R and a DigiMax (16 tracks simultaneous). I 've used the Fostex a few times, and while transfering the tracks is easy, unless I do all the tape first, I've been a bit fearful of trying to line up analog to digital after the fact.

I'd love to do VOX and any acoustics (including drums) analaog and keyboards, midi, electric instrument DI, (micing analog) all digitally and be able to 'marry' them easily....

Use PTLE as an edit interface and harddisk recorder. Outputs on your digi-->tape in on board-->mix from board-->buss L&R-->input 2 tracks tape (L&R)-->output tape-->input board(2 channel L&R)-->final EQ-->input PTLE (stereo)--->CD in hand. Use PTLE to edit noise and silent tracks, maybe a few plug-ins here and there. Kind of basic how I described it but you get the picture.

As far as Sync Tape to PTLE you need a SMPTE Controler. I just learned this myself. Check out my thread in analog only forum titled "sync tape to digi 001 help please" the answer is there and I bought my SMPTE Controller on ebay for $32 http://www.jlcooper.com/pages/pps2.html this is same one that I found on Ebay
