I started out with a cheap mixer and thought it was great...until I realized how much better my recordings sounded when I just used my audio interface. I'm currently mixerless, but I'll go back one day when I get a much better (and bigger :D ) mixer.

Do you want passive monitors (cheaper, but require an amp to power them) or active monitors (more expensive, but have a built-in amp and don't need an external one)? I personally use Samson Rubicon R5A active monitors...other good ones are Behringer Truths, Mackie HR624, M-Audio BX8A, and KRK...

Are you powering it by FireWire or by an external AC adapter? Sometimes more heat is generated when it's plugged directly into an outlet. Also check the manual and website for some information.

Check the M-Audio website to see if you have the latest driver for the interface. Updates ocassionally contain bug fixes, etc. so you might want to look into that. If you do have the latest driver, try a clean install of the mobile pre.
