Depends on what exactly you're doing...if you plan on only recording one track at a time, you could get by with just a mic and preamp to begin with.
If you want to do more than one track at a time, say 2-4, you would probably be better of with a mixer.
Also make sure you have a decent sound...
Sounds alright overall...the beats in the first part of the song seemed to be real bassy when I turned my volume up...rattled the speakers, but maybe that's what you're going for. I'm also listening on some small stereo desktop speakers so maybe that's the problem.
The guitar tone/distortion...
Going the DIY route is the only way to go if you want to actually make a living from music, unless you get really lucky and hit it big, and even then most of the money goes to the record company/label. The best way musicians make money is by live perforances, and even then they have to pay...
Yea I may try a compresser, I never thought of that before?
Adobe Audition has a built in 'compresser' but the interface is kind of confusing and I don't have much experience with compressers.
I did download the free Compresser plugin, MasterComp or something like that so I'll give...
Thanks, you're right that I need to use my ears to judge.
I've tried EQing a little, but when I came back to it after and listened to it again I just thought it sounded worse than before. I try my best to get the best sound possible while tracking to avoid having to EQ (because I'm no good with...
I've got a shitty amp that I'm recording with and the lead sounds are pretty harsh.
I'm recording it dry and then adding reverb to it after to smooth it out a little which works pretty well actually (there is no reverb on the amp). I'm using the free GlaceVerb plugin in Adobe Audition.
This...
Well, have you done your research on your gear? From a glance I don't see anything wrong with it.
What kind of laptop is it? You say you're using a USB interface, so that means your laptop needs USB ports, preferably USB 2.0, if it's 1.0 you're going to have latency issues.
I've never used an...
Me too, my friend is getting a laptop so he can start recording, I may even ditch my PC and get a laptop for portability reasons.
Any suggestions? The downside of laptops is they aren't really customizeable, and most I've seen don't come with firewire, but I think some come with USB 2.0... I...
I've got a friend who had the UB802 mixer, until it stopped working. Buying Behringer gear like this mixer is a gamble, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I wouldn't say the pres on the mixer are terrible but they're definately low quality.
Figure $40 for the mixer, with 4 inputs/pres...
Wasn't crazy about some of the tones of the guitar, especially during the solo, but that's probably more from the equipment you're using (amp/pedal?)
Other than that I really liked the song, very catchy.
Get the sound you want out of the amp first, then record it and tweak the EQ on your amp until it sounds good on recording...sometimes it can sound good out of the amp but not on recording...
Sometimes lowering the bass a lot, and raising the mids to about 7, and the treble to about 5 or 6 can...
I would suggest mic'ing an amp, even if the amp and/or mic aren't that great. It sounds much more realistic.
But if you want to go direct, hooking it into the mixer will work, but it would be best to get a direct box, or just hook the output straight into your recording interface (soundcard, or...
People should practice before they even think about recording.
I would suggest recording them with just a room mic and let them hear how they sound. Their timing, pitch, etc. Then tell them to be realistic about their expectations.
Anything for creating wierd, special FX. Lounge Lizard has a bunch of knobs and effects you can modify to create cool sounds and effects like tremelo, wah, phaser, delay, etc.
But what would be even better is something made especially for special FX. Any kind of VST instrument, effect, or...
