Hello all! I was wondering if I could bug yall yet again for some advice. I am currently setting up my home studio and I am wanting to keep it all pretty portable. I will be running a Lexicon Lambda USB Audio Interface into my laptop running Cool Edit Pro and as of right now I have an AT 2020 mic. I am currently planning to order some monitors (not sure which ones yet), a mic stand, an XLR cable, and some nice headphones (probably sennheiser hd 280s). So here's my cry for help...am I making a giant mistake with any of this gear? I almost feel like i'm throwing a way a bunch of money and I'm going to get a bunch of gear that really should never be found in the same room and would never work well together...Is there anything i'm missing/overlooking in the entry level home studio (through a computer) setup?

I'm not really sure if it's a bad combo or not. Everyone has to start somewhere. I am using an Omega myself, with Cubase, Shure SM58. These are working ok for me so far, being new to digital recording. As time progresses, I am finding that I want to upgrade to different equipment, as I am learning more as I go (especially here and tweakhead, etc.). I am pretty happy right now just getting all this music out of my head that's been trapped there, as you probably want to do also. I really like my omega, though...it's been easy to use, so far. Wish I knew more...sorry.

Well, have you done your research on your gear? From a glance I don't see anything wrong with it.

What kind of laptop is it? You say you're using a USB interface, so that means your laptop needs USB ports, preferably USB 2.0, if it's 1.0 you're going to have latency issues.

I've never used an AT2020 mic, but if it's a condenser it probably needs phantom power. I looked up your interface real quick and it says it has phantom power so that's good.

Other then these basic things I don't see why you would have any problems.

As for monitors, you don't need $2,000+ monitors to get good mixes, infact, buying expensive monitors and monitoring in a poorly treated room would just be a waste.

Make sure the room you're recording in is ideal, you may even want to do that before getting any gear, but that's up to you.
