    VST recommendations? PLZZZZ

The Universal Audio pak is worth 5x as much as the retail price. If you're serious about audio production, spend the money to get every piece. You won't regret it. Waves has some great plugs. I like this package in particular.http://www.zzounds.com/a--2676837/item--WAVRENMAX

The Great 96 kHz Debate....all invited!

I'd look at different mics, reverbs and instruments. Maybe mix down to tape?

    Stereo Interleaved and stereo split?

Stereo split will save two different files. One for left, one for right. For the life of me, I've never figured out a reason for doing this.

Starting a studio- what do i need?

Oh yeah, once you have this stuff- record as much as you can and don't be afraid to try new things to get the sounds you want and to get the best performance out of the band. A great performance recorded with $20 mics is a better record than a horrible performance with all the gear in the world.

Starting a studio- what do i need?

I'd start by spending a week searching the internet for "the best way to record (instrument)" threads. Look for guitar, drums, piano, vocals, and whatever else you think you'll be recording fairly often. Spend a day or two on every instrument, just doing research. You'll see patterns in what...

    How much $ for mastering

I work from www.joaocarvalhomastering.com for what usually works out to about $75/song.

    mixering and mastering

If you're going to mail your disc away to get it mastered, there are a handful of engineers on this site (myself included) who will do it cheaper (and probably better) than this "online mastering" place.

Does anyone know where I can find articles specifically about subtractive EQ?

Always ask yourself: "What's *right* about this?". It's way too easy to find out what's wrong and start playing with it.

If you had to, could you produce a solid recording with a single $100 mic?

I've been thinking lately that it would be interesting to have "The $200 Contest" where teams of engineers/musicians would be asked to record one song using only gear that cost $200 or less. No mic, instrument, interface etc could cost more than $200. Finding the gear would be half the trouble.

If you had to, could you produce a solid recording with a single $100 mic?

I mastered a recording last summer that was written and recorded in 24 hours with only one mic and one amp used on both guitar and bass overdubs. The same musician played every instrument. He played drums however he felt like, then overdubbed bass and guitar- writing all melodic parts of the...

Microphones and Cassette Multi-Tracks (488 mkII): Will Better Mics Be Noticeable ??

We don't have to debate. You can continue putting everything through a portastudio mixer if you wish. It doesn't really have much to do with me.

Microphones and Cassette Multi-Tracks (488 mkII): Will Better Mics Be Noticeable ??

You don't think that putting the audio signal through the tascam mixer twice (in and out) is going to colour the sound?

    What happened to CAD?

The mic came with a one-sheet with a graph of its frequency response. I'll use it as a floor tom mic.

Microphones and Cassette Multi-Tracks (488 mkII): Will Better Mics Be Noticeable ??

In my experience, the worst part about those all-in-one cassette recorders is that you have to send the signal through their preamps and eq. They seem to cloud everything up.

    What happened to CAD?

I just picked up seven of their mics in the drum package. Two ICM 417s (SDC), four TSM 411s (dynamic instrument/tom mic) and one KBM 412 (the kick mic). I haven't used them yet but I've heard good things about the small condensers. The kick looks to be VERY hyped in the low end. 25db boost...

From rap vocals to soul vocals...

What is it about this technique that isn't working with the female vocals? Play around with compression and chorus effects on the backing vocals if they're cutting through too much.

Need Some Helpful Ears on This Mix

You're definitely onto something here. The song is great and the production isn't that bad, really. There is a muffled sound over the whole thing that would probably fix itself with a few better mics and a better set of plugins. If you're looking at putting some money into your recording setup...

Microphones and Cassette Multi-Tracks (488 mkII): Will Better Mics Be Noticeable ??

My answer is a definite yes. Just this week, I recorded a jazz duo live to 8-track cassette (Tascam 238) in a great room with high end mics and some really decent preamps. The sound is pretty damn good. Much much better than a bunch of bad mics would do. The band was a little confused when I...

    Mastering sofware for PC

Wavelab seems to do its job pretty well on a fairly small budget, but I wouldn't expect "mastering" to work out very well without some plugins designed for that purpose. $1500 worth of Voxengo and Universal Audio UAD-1 plugins should get decent results. Not "pro mastering", but definitely not...

    Mastering sofware for PC

Sequoia has some really amazing editing features with the Object Editor. I'm still getting used to it but it makes a huge difference.
