Powerful hooks that overshadow the song

Exactly, if you love it you'll keep doing it until you spit out something you like. I tried writing a long time ago following the "steps" or "rules" from a book, it sounded like boring pre-fab pretense you get from big name stars when they get lazy. I'll never look for advice on it again, it's...

How important is subject matter in songs ?

I always thought the lyrics to "Surfin Bird" DID mean something! Don't they mean . . . . . .. . b-b-b-bird bird bird b-bird's the word a well a bird bird bird the brid is the word a well a bird bird bird well the bird is the word a well a bird bird bird b-bird's the word

    Critique my MacBeth!

Good point, I don't think I've ever wrote lyrics considering back story other than a character's situation but it sounds like it would be effective with certain styles of lyric. The techniques PT is talking about could be very useful when fleshing out character based or "story" lyrics, I could...

The Lonely Weekend (a new tune)

The new mix sounds good, I hear everything better. I don't know if it's just the sound of the kit but what I was hearing sounded like maybe a wood block or handclaps that add texture. I also thought I heard a sub or maybe the bass amp speaker rattling in places that sounded cool. Anyway, the new...

First serious attempt at recording our own songs

I thought this song was just great and you should be proud of the job for a first recording. I too noticed some dynamics issues with the bass, there are 2 notes on the run-up to the lead guitar part that jump out, but I like the bass sound. I thought the mastered version's compression enhanced...

    Critique my MacBeth!

Well, my TV viewing mostly encompasses NFL football, some of the players do a great job acting like they're injured or acting like their poor play was someone else's fault. Maybe we should all have a go at your scene and see if there isn't a Robert DeNiro lurking here somewhere.

The Lonely Weekend (a new tune)

Sounds good, nice song, there is some interesting percussion that I can't hear very well but otherwise I like it.

    Critique my MacBeth!

Damn. I have a BA in Television Viewing and to me it sounded a little forced and tight like you were trying to get it just right, not like you felt it and it was just flowing out. I listened on headphones and the breathing made it sound uncomfortably like you were whispering in my ear. I give...

Stinky Gorilla - Need Mix Impressions

Cool tune! I'm listening on phones and the bass is heavy to me, same issue with the snare also. I really like the guitars and rhythms, and the drum part is good for a bass player if you can get the levels right.

    best mic ever

I think my amp-head speaker is broke, I put my ear to it and even had a finger in my other ear but couldn't her a thing. Personally, my best mic is a realistic that came with a cassette deck I bought in 1973.

    Mixing Help- New Folk/Rock Album

I like the sounds you have here, like the reverb too for the distance added, it fits the song. The timing issues with the drums and guitars are somewhat distracting and if time is a problem maybe you can move or cut odd strums? The space def. improved with the advice and work you've done, very nice.

    Orayo -- Newest piece

Wow, this really matured in a short time here! Very good song, I like it a lot. Love the reverby short stops. Kinda sounds like The Who meet Neil Diamond, in a cool way. I too would like more bass please, it sounds good when I hear it, could I have some more? The drims get a little buried too...

Come Die with Me AKA Faithful Kind of Morning

I am very happy for you to have matched these lyrics with this tune, nice job! It would be nice if you would post them, but cool if you don't want to. I agree with a lot of the mix critiques, Heatmiser seemed to sum it up and I won't pile on. I definitely vote for the old intro as I liked the...

    The Jongleurs - The Peddler

That's a very tasty sideways carrot! I enjoyed this song quite a bit, very nice harmonies and the feel of the guitar sound I love. I also liked the percussion but I would probably have added a bass line anchor at some point, not that it needs it. Your guitar solo was very good as well, using...

    Virtual guitar amps/analog guitar amps

I certainly hve no problem with real amps. I love the feel of power that oozes from my fingers through the circuits and blasts out the speakers, I love the smell, the heat, the glow of the tubes. I just have to appreciate new technology as well. There are tons of players, and fans of those...

Which mix sound better? A vs. B.

I like al 3 new mixes as well. The old ones sound squashed and even the waveforms look much more compressed than the new ones. The increased dynamics in the new versions really open up the guitar sounds and the vocals. Good songs too, the singer has some chops.

Faithful kind of morning - instrumental

That's a cool track. I like your originality, even if I did think you were doing Hell's Bells at the beginning. Really, I like the abrupt cuts in the intro also, they create a feel that is different from a crossfade and it adds to the touch of dementia in this song. Now, that could be totally...

    Best Amp Modelers

Deja-vu here with the other amp/sim thread. I've been using Guitar Rig 5 and I really like the sound and options it provides. GR has every effect imaginable and many I never had access to before. The automation and layering possibilities make it a very interesting tool and it includes what they...
