Thanks Ray. I think I like the guitar playing the best, it was heavily inspired (maybe even plagiarized) from John Fahey. But I'm not convinced by the sound of the guitar parts now that the piano has been turned down and they're more audible. And also the tuning issue. Back to the drawing board, fret board...

You wanna do claves on this tune, I'd be more than honoured of course. I honestly thought you were kidding, and I had to look up what claves were. I'm 100% up for it and so if the offer stands and I haven't burned my bridges, I will send you the file before I 'go live'. But out of interest, do you pay dobro as well, Dobro? Because really I'd love to hear it if you do. As a side line to this thread...I'm really into slide guitar at the moment and only recently realised that's what your username was all about. So, I was just wondering...

No, I don't play dobro. Yes, the clave offer was real. Possibly I was being weird, but what I meant was that if you want to come up with meaningful lyrics, then that will require a 'conversation' with yourself.

This sort of music I do like very much. Reminds me of The Beatles (George Harrison mostly). In my opinion you should write an entire LP on this kind of "atmosphere". Probably not too much electronic would serve the cause best. But that's just me. I am curious how you develop the material.

I thought the piano sounded fine. Once the vocals are laid down, it will fit in nicely. I read what you said about out of tune guitar as part of you approach based on your final result, but I don't think it will work that way. Stay in tune.
The intro is a work in progress?? Maybe, hopefully. The tails of the bell ringing and whistling/guitar part are cut off or transition abruptly. It doesn't sound natural. If you want to make them sound natural and still keep to a timeline, you can use your envelope or automation on the tracks to fade them out or cross fade to the next section of the song. Just a bit of editing will fix it right up.
I really like the drums sounds you have. What are you using?? The drums fit the mood of the song perfectly. I don't think they need to be any louder than they are now. Very cool chord changes, too. Looking forward to hearing the completed version.

That's a cool track. I like your originality, even if I did think you were doing Hell's Bells at the beginning.
Really, I like the abrupt cuts in the intro also, they create a feel that is different from a crossfade and it adds to the touch of dementia in this song. Now, that could be totally out of line with what you're going for but that's why I liked it. The progressions and the lines you play, bending into notes and such, work well and the somber drum sound keeps it marching on. I did wish I could hear a little more of the individual instruments at times and wonder if some more creative panning or reverb might create some space. Can't wait to hear it with your vocal, that can change the mood of the track so much.

I'm really stuck on the lyrics. This always happens to me, I come up with one good verse and chorus that I kind of base the whole song on while I'm writing all the parts. And then I have to wait for ages for the rest of the words to come to me. I've filled about 10+ pages with nonsense so far. Lucky there's still plenty of other stuff to do.

That's awesome. Thanks for listening. People often say my stuff sounds like the Beatles. I was heavy into George about 2 months ago, but the Beatles have always been a firm favourite of mine since I was about 7. St Pepper was one of the first LPs I played. I think the colourful and weird cover attracted me at first, but I listened to that album a LOT.

That was my bad. I think it's because it's open dtuning. I can't tune with my ears, so didn't hear it myself, but I think the F# was out of tune. The drums are just loops. I spent about $50 and bought a couple of different themes, blues & indie from Loop Loft. This song was the first one where I built the drum track before recording anything else. Well I had a roughly cut guitar track so that I could figure out the timing of the choruses and such. Took me absolutely ages.
Yeh, I will work on the intro a bit more. I'd like to have it transition a bit more smoothly than it does too. It's a bit messy and I think if I redo the guitar part and mix the sounds (will have to learn how to cross fade), it will help smooth it out a bit.

Thanks for listening. I'm glad there is a bit of an unhinged flavour to the song. I kind of wanted to do something a bit different to my normal G, D A chord progression. I know the intro could be a better though. At the moment is really is just clips that I plonked in there so I reckon a bit of work there should be OK without affecting the mood.
I'm glad you liked it and thanks for the feedback. I'll definitely keep it all in mind. I just hope it turns out OK with the vocals.

Technical mixing considerations aside.....you have very interesting musical ideas in your head. They are still somewhat rough and almost random-ish in the arrangement, but all in a very good way.
It's that "just starting out" inspiration that provides that raw almost "innocent to recording" kind of music flavor that can often be lost once the recording innocence wears off and things become more formal and deliberate...and technical.
Reminds me of my own early home rec days messing about with a simple 4-track tape deck, where all you had is your imagination to make it work.
You may want to buddy up with someone who has the technical stuff down cold, and then you can just focus on the music, so you don't lose that raw innocence to your ideas and your approach, because you have some cool ideas....if that makes any sense.

Jimmy offered to help me out on my last tune, but I'm still working on redoing the vocals. Tried again this weekend, but not good enough. When I think about asking time of other people, I start to feel the pressure to make what I've done really good.
Having said that, I really like the input of other people. Everything anyone has done for me so far, has been totally great and added so much to what I have. I just feel myself that I have a long way to go before I am comfortable presenting an idea for someone else to work on. I should be in a band probably. But I feel too old and miserable, at the same time as feeling too naive and inexperienced.
Working on them now. Got a new mic, a dynamic. Heaps better than the condensor I was borrowing.
That was a pretty rough cut of the vocals, even by my standards. It maybe doesn't get much better than that, but hopefully when I figure out the lyrics and get the vocals sounding how I want they will gel the whole thing together.

Yes much more bass and less piano. Totally agree. I am learning pretty much everything as I go along, including how to 'play' midi piano and a very real bass. Bear with me another few weeks while I sort it all out. In the meantime, I really appreciate the vote of confidence.

Thank you, but I think I need to keep bashing my own head against a brick wall on this. I'm not sure why it's so hard this time, possibly the weird tuning, or off beat rhythm. OR maybe I'm running out of things to say. Fat chance.
