    some help needed please.

I think it's generally accepted that recording from the line out of guitar amps always sounds pretty shitty because the high end roll off of the speaker has a lot of effect on the overall tone.

    Midi noob here

Yes it is that simple. Your other options are to get an external sound module (this takes midi signals as input and outputs sound) or to use dedicated software within the pc to do the same (e.g. gigastudio). At the end of the day it depends on what you want to do and what quality you want...

    Stupid question (probably.....)

Here is a pic of what I am talking about. Notice that in the echo control panel (left) a peak is nearly clipping, yet in the waveform in cubase the peaks don't get above about 60%. Most of the stuff isn't getting above about 10%.... Can someone explain to my why recording at a lower volume is...

    Stupid question (probably.....)

Yeah, everything in the echo control panel is allways up full.

    Stupid question (probably.....)

When I record, I set the input to my audio interface (Echo Audiofire12) so the peaks just clip the red (-3db I think although the labelling isn't clear). However when I record this into cubase and look at the waveform in the sample editor, the peaks bearly get to 60%. I would have expected...

    Cubase freezing

Don't think that is an issue with your disk drive speed. Sounds more like an issue with the tascam driver to me maybe. Try checkling for an updated driver.

    Cubase freezing

What do you mean by "freeze"? Do you mean you get audio drop outs? Does the disk overload "light" on the transport in cubase come on when it freezes? This would indicate that the disk drive can't keep up with the traffic. A 4200rpm hard drive isn't really fast enough for recording music...

    Another Question

I haven't used pro tools so I can't give any advice on that but on Cubase the bus (or group as it's called in cubase) has it's own channel (volume, pan, eq etc). So you could for instance, record the drums to 8 tracks and then during mix down create a group for the drums and assign all 8 tracks...

    Another Question

A bus is a sub-mix, i.e. a mix of only the signals you send to that bus. It enables you to apply effects, EQ etc to the whole group of signals at once. For example, you can mix your dums to a bus and stick a compressor on the bus, then you are compressing the whole drum mix.

    Volume question.

24 bits gives u 2 to the power 24 discreate levels that can be recorded, that means that each little "jump" from one level to another is quite small. If u record the same signal at 1/2 the volume, then the jumps are effectively twice as big compared to the signal. I think this is what Eddie ;)...

    Volume question.

    Volume question.

Ooo a question I can answer  If you were to record the harp at the level you wanted it in the final mix you would be wasting headroom (wow, I used a real recording word), loose resolution (as bob said) and also reduce your S/N ratio (I think). Do as bob says. Plus if you decided later...

Tell me how to check ohm of speaker

Using your radio shack meter will do you no good what so ever, it measures resistance, you need to find the impedance of the speaker which is subtely different (I know how in my head but can't really explain it). Now I've got a degree in Electrical and Electronics engineering and I don't really...
