Keep in mind, the bands you speak of have a "large" budget! Try pulling your mic back a bit, maybe a foot or two. It will give your recording more of a full-room kind of sound. It might add a little bass. Again, you are not in a multi-million dollar recording facility.

wav is better quality than mp3. Just think of an mp3 as a smashed wav file. Smaller and easier to download, upload - but you loose quality. At least thats what Disk Faktory tells me

It really doesn't matter that tapes are outdated if you are using them for your personal use. You definately should think about how many imputs you will need to record your band. If you just want to stick a mic in a room then go with a 4 track tape recorder. You can get one for a hundred bucks
