From what I understand, most laptops don't have a line in on the soundcard. Mine is a Compaq and it only has headphone and mic jacks. I use a firepod for input since I have firewire. I also have an M-Audio MobilPre, which uses the USB port. It only does 16-bit and has a limit of 2 channels...
As you can guess from my handle, I do a lot of folk music, mostly Irish. I also write in the folk genre. I know this is the songwriting forum, but anybody who wants lyrics or discussion of folk songs might want to head over to www.mudcat.org. A caution though: don't ask, "What is Folk?" over...
I decided to, of all things, RTFM. Here's what it says about Time Stretch: "This function allows you to change the length and "tempo" of the selected audio, without affecting the pitch."
Apparently, it can slow it down, but it will not drop the pitch.
Damn.
Sending in a copy of the CD will protect the recording. To protect the songs themselves, you send in a written copy (lyrics and a notated melody line are sufficient) and use a different form. So to cover everything would cost $60.
I'm in Columbia, right off Rt. 29. What sort of music do you...
OK, now we're getting somewhere. I think everybody thought that the RCA was connected to your soundcard. Your soundcard jack is 1/8" (like headphone jacks on portable CD players), right? I will assume that is the case.
You will need a 1/4" to 1/8" cable. (Probably) If the insert jack is...
Something to bear in mind when he files for the copyright is that he can register copyright on all the songs as a group. This will save bundles of money as the fee is $30. See www.copyright.gov for details.

That is the usual use for the insert. However, it also gives you a place to tap the signal just after the preamp, before anything else in the signal chain. This allows you to bypass a lot of potential noise-generating circuitry. The channel controls may be noisy, so if you eliminate them from...
Your mixer has insert patch points. Your manual will tell you where to find them. They are basically a line out and line in for you to insert signal processing gear. What they are suggesting is to run a cable from the insert patch point (output from your preamp) to the line in on your...
The Operations Manual is a PDF file included on the CD-ROM. If you look in your Steinberg folder you will see a Documentation folder. All the manuals will be in there. If you don't find it there, put the CD in the drive and use Windoze Explorer to find it there.
For the time being, anything is better than nothing, but I would strongly recommend saving up and getting some good monitors before you try to do anything serious, i.e., something you would want to shop around as a demo or produce for sale. For getting ideas down and playing and getting to know...
Correct about the preamp. Each of those sscientist listed has 2 microphone preamps.
The monitors, unfortunately, can turn out to be a high-dollar item. Most people here recommend you spend at least $350 on powered monitors to get something fairly reasonable-sounding.
And, of course...
A lot of firewire interfaces have mic preamps built in. For example, the Presonus Firepod has 8 of them. It's $600 just about anywhere. There are others as well.
What's your budget like?
BTW, welcome to the board! :D
Jeff
Yeah, but it looks like one hell of a mess determining which license to get. It looks like even free distribution has a license scheme of its own, with a minimum of 200 pounds per song. That can't be right. Can any UK legal types interpret this stuff for us poor musician types?
BTW, I also...
You were probably talking about the Fair Use Doctrine. Information about that is available at http://www.copyright.gov/fls/fl102.html (for the US). There are limits, even if nothing is being charged. If you cover somebody's song and make 5 million copies and give them all away, chances are...
My second post is corrected (I didn't think the first one made it through) You should credit yourself and the original composer for the music.
With respect to the charging for it issue, the copyright law makes no distinction between works disseminated for profit and works disseminated for...
On the song where you used the other composer's music, the credit should read:
Lyrics: Shack (or your real name)
Music: Original composer's name, your name
It's that simple.
