Other than the need for phantom power to power condenser mics, how different are they from dynamic mics? Are condensers suitable for loud metal vocals?

I'm looking to get a cheap keyboard that has midi capabilities. I'm looking to use the midi notes from the keyboard and use software synths to produce the sound. I use Sonar to record. Is it possible to play a midi keyboard and hear the notes produced by the software synth in real time?
