Using midi keyboard and software synth

I'm looking to get a cheap keyboard that has midi capabilities.

I'm looking to use the midi notes from the keyboard and use software synths to produce the sound. I use Sonar to record. Is it possible to play a midi keyboard and hear the notes produced by the software synth in real time?

Yes.

First, read up on midi basics in these two good articles - part one and part two.

Then go here to find a controller that you think would fit your needs and budget.

Then visit KVR and start by downloading some free softsynths. RGC Triangle II and Minimogue are good ones to start with provided that you're running Sonar 5 or later. If you're running Sonar 4 or earlier you'll need a VST to DX wrapper --- if you need it and you're not sure where to get it post again.

Its THE midi controler mate. Excelent map functions, truly a groundbreaking product, its getting amazing reviews

"The ReMOTE SL25 heralded a completely new era of MIDI control. It’s the first controller keyboard that detects the software you are using in your virtual studio and logically ‘automaps’ that software’s controllers to the keyboard’s own front panel knobs and sliders, all at the click of a button. In short, no more fiddly overlays as the keyboard takes all the hard work out of assigning its controls to the software you are using."
