If this sounds ignorant, tell me.

I think sjoko's problem is that Royston does seem to want to get something for nothing - yeah, there's 11 million bucks in the States (is that all? That is peanuts) but there is a hell of a lot of people going after that cash too. You can't count on it at all. Sure, apply for it - but while...

Monitors - why do I need them?!

<whistle blows> OK, guys. Chill a sec... I think you are being a BIT hard on Cathy. She has an opinion (one I don't agree with either) but let's raise the level of discussion back up to pros and cons of monitors and away from just insults, 'k? Pros of Monitors : - much faster to get the...

    Delta66 + ntrack + win2000 = WORKS!

Wheee. Upgraded to Win2000 over the weekend and all of a sudden everything works. Under 98 I was having huge stability and latency problems with n-track - under 2000 I am getting less then 7ms latency (basically, I can't hear it) on the LIVE function even with effects - very cool. I sound...

    S/pdif

Levey - sorry, maybe I wasn't clear. I was saying with the Delta44 you'd need to go analog, ie, out the analog outs of the DAT, then in the analog ins of the 44... With the 66 you can just run a RCA cable between them and stay digital. The 66 will sync up to the DAT so you get bit for bit...

    S/pdif

Even if you don't - if you might rent a DAT recorder (like I'm doing this thursday) or you have people bringing gear into your studio it is worth it. It gives you that nice flexibility... If I had to guess, you're debating between the Delta 44 and the 66... I went with the 66 since I figured...

Can anyone help me choose a mixer please?

You could also do what I did - buy used Mackie mixer. I got a 1604 and I'm very pleased with it - and I paid less then I would have for a 1202 VLZ Pro... I get great flexibility at the cost of not getting the better preamps, though (VLZ apparently has better preamps, I find the ones I'm using...

    What are the best monitors???

The event 20/20's are supposed to be pretty good, but I don't think you'll be happy pairing them to a $100 amp... you need the whole package. I would see what the 20/20bas is going for - that's a great system apparently (it was out of my price range and it may be out of yours, though) I went...

monitor/ headphones config. with SB Live

I don't see why not either. Give it a go - see what happens. Keep the receipt :)

monitor/ headphones config. with SB Live

Well, the Yamaha speakers I was using actually sound pretty good (for cheapass speakers) and they do have a headphone jack. I think the last time I saw them they were like $70 (canadian)... so that would be in your range... I think that's probably your best bet - go down to Future Shop and take...

monitor/ headphones config. with SB Live

Hey, Rats. I assume you've got an amp for your monitors (or powered monitors) and so that part isn't a problem. Is that correct? For the headphones, I use a cheap pair of Yamaha computer speakers that have a headphone jack on them. Normally I use them with headphones, but they also a good...

    What are the best monitors???

Yeah, I was under the impression that decent far-field monitors were more expensive then $400 as well... but I've never been in the market for them

    do i need a mixer?

You'll also be able to do submixes if you have a mixer - ie, if you have 10 sound sources, but only 8 inputs, you can mix a few of them on the mixer to bring it down to 8. Always a shame when you have to do that, but it is better then just not being able to record all the sound

    I'll be away for a bit :)

Yeah, it is already dangerous there :) We'll miss you, John! Come back to us soon - your flock will be waiting. Have a great vacation

    What are the best monitors???

It depends what you are doing, is my understanding (bear in mind that I am not an expert, but I've been reading here for a while :) Nearfields are great if you are close to them (hence "near" :) ) They depend less on the quality of the room (though you still have to control reflections coming...

    Arranging a usable, 1-person studio

The last one noteworthy has - I've never tried the first. It is a pretty cool product - and cheap. Sort of like N-track in that way.

    What are the best monitors???

I hate to recommend anyone buy anything without listening to them... but they are gorgeous sounding monitors.

    Yamaha PSR series

Anyone have any comments on the Yamaha PSR series? I've got a PSR-740 and I quite like it, but I'm beginning to think I could have spent my money better elsewhere. It has some bells and whistles I really don't need (I really don't need a sequencer - I have a PC - I really don't need a vocoder...

2 questions about control room/practice area

Right. And cuz of that bass at reasonable levels, you need seriously thick (cuz of low freq) absorbing stuff behind you. Ok, cool. I may be in that situation - in order to get a reasonable size live room, I may have to really make a tinyish control room. I wanna make sure that it is possible...

2 questions about control room/practice area

Assuming you've got decent sound insulation from the band room and good absorbtion behind you, wouldn't that work? You could keep the monitors (I'm assuming nearfields here) at a reasonable volume (since you are close to them), avoid hearing most of the band noise (because of decent sound...

    Dreaded Garage!

Its a clip-on mic for brass/wind instruments, yeah. Fairly long gooseneck on it. I really want a clip-on one, since trumpet players don't stand still and I need a reasonably long gooseneck to deal with mutes. I actually really liked the 418's sound on the trumpet, nice and sweet and clear...
