Mic Shoot-out - Clean Guitar Sound

The least I could do consider the knowledge I've sucked from you on the time I've been here. That and I stole your "huh?" idea from your studio equipment list and put it on mine. In any event, it should now be available at http://www.oldgrover.org/bluebear/micShoot_MP3.zip Let me know if...

    Yorkville YSM1p Powered monitors

Well, I use the Yorkville CR5 amp with the Yorkville speakers - rather overpowered, they do have a amp is designed for the speakers, but I really like it. It was recommended to me by the Yorkville guys to pair with the YSM-1s and it sounds great. Everyone here says Hefler is the way to go, though

I need a volume knob! Advice: preamp or homebrew?

Stupid question, but why not use the stereo outs that are controlled by the main fader? Then use the lineouts for tape or whatever? What mixer is this?

Mic Shoot-out - Clean Guitar Sound

Bruce, If you like, I'll put it up on my site. I'll download it now, with your permission I'll put it up there.

Polished up, ready for a listen

I get about 50/50 - "I like the singing" or "the singing grates". More guitar? That makes sense to me. When you say more panning, you mean two different guitar parts split left, right sorta thing? Thanks for the comment - I am hunting brutal honesty :) ... I think she should settle down a...

    New Adventures in Recording

Hmm. I'm going to have to say "me too"... except... once in a while, that hiss (like around 2:45) that hiss actually sounded cool.... but not as often as it is in there :) What the heck is that anyways?

Polished up, ready for a listen

Polished up, ready for a listen

I'm still new at this mixing stuff, but I've done much more polishing on the song now and would love it if someone gave it a listen. Country/folk song from a singer/songwriter named Amy Jacobs, who is in the unfortunate state of not being able to afford a better recording studio then mine :)...

why is the clinic so dead lately

I just said buggrit and bought my own domain and picked up a webhost, so I will have plenty of room to have multiple copies of things. www.oldgrover.org coming soon to a computer near you! (just as soon as the dns/whois stuff gets propogated) Anyways, when I get the new mix done, I'll make...

Advice needed: compressor settings for mastering acoustic music.

Just to give the joke away, Bruce is talking about the RNC - Really Nice Compressor. A cheap box that Bruce (and lots of others) swear by. http://www.fmraudio.com/ I've heard it called the best compressor under $2000 - and since it only costs $200, that is pretty damn impressive. No...

why is the clinic so dead lately

Mixmkr - that's cool. I guess that's two reasons you didn't dl mine - I conceded it is rough and it is 8.5 mb! I can certainly understand wanting to spend your time on the finished stuff, makes perfect sense. On the other hand, by cornering a few people physically around me, I got some...

OldGrover finally puts up - Please take a listen. Country/folk singer/songwriter

Well, I'm going to remix the thing anyways in the next coupla days, so if you are bandwidth challenged and only want to download it once, I'll let you know when I get it redone. If you've got a decent connection, though, I'd still like to hear your opinion.

    A jazzy (sorta) song.

Its just over 5 minutes, at 224kbps... 8.5 mb is a lot - I was planning on putting a 128kbps up as well, but I've only got 10 mb quota there. sigh. Where's a good spot to put this stuff?

why is the clinic so dead lately

Well, I'm trying to work up enough karma by posting my thoughts on songs so that someone actually does the same for me :) I can't believe how anxious I am to hear opinions....

    A jazzy (sorta) song.

Sweet, mellow song. Man... I just could hear a ripping solo - trumpet or sax, maybe - floating out of that, though.. sort of a longing, break-your-heart solo, floating up... man. Anyways, as it stands, a seriously good track. Beautifully done. Definitely, it is going in my listening rotation.

    "the payment"

Melodic sound, not quite what I was expecting from the description... I get Rush vibes from the beginning and a sense of the familiar (in a good way, I think) from the whole thing. (I think I was expecting something more like S8-N's stuff, this is the first song of yours I've heard) Polished...

    My first MP3 in ages.

Nice, S8N. Listening to it for the second time through right now. There is that Mr Bunglish sound in places - if you did this first, I'm really impressed (actually, I'm really impressed ANYWAY, but...) Great overall sound. Of course, I'm listening to it on crap headphones at work - can't...

OldGrover finally puts up - Please take a listen. Country/folk singer/songwriter

Finally got permission to put up some stuff I'm recording. This is my first take in my new, organized setup... original singer/songwriter (not me). Country/folk Please let me know what you think.... this isn't a final cast in stone mix, but it certainly is an indication of the direction...

    Help with Good Sound

Ok, so I think there is a consensus to get the preamp, then worry about mic placement and choice after that. Probably since there is a grill on your amp, the proximity effect that I am talking about wouldn't come into play... but I could be wrong. I am just in trial and error mode myself

Organization - patchbays and such.. opinions on my evil plan solicited

Thanks - I think it went well. *AND* I got permission from the artist to post the results, so at least one of the songs will end up in the mixing forum later tonight. WHEE!
