    Venere - Grey

super tight Well yes...definately a green day riff...almost identical for the verse!! But thats about all that is similiar I'd say... the mix sounds super tight...I mean...REALLY tight...almost too perfect if thats possible...lots of cool noises and effects in there as well... The only thing I...

funny noises Yup...you are right AB!! lol...there are a few noises in there still...I thought I got them all. Very keen ears you have just before it all kicks in at the beginning...and there is a cough or throat clearing in the first break...I agree with what you said about the screams and...

    angry

oh...and another thing I also bumped up the guitar eq a smidgeon between 2 and 7khz...and I took off most of the 'metal tank' reverb on the snare...that was giving it too much of that 'live' sound and making the snare sound too far in the background I think.

appreciation Thanks guys!!! The comments help the songs soooo much!! I don't know what I'd do without your ears...well...I'd have some crappy sounding songs!!! Here are the changes I made to hopefully help the sound: 1) I doubled the bass drum track and cut out the 80hz and 400hz area in the...

    no monitors? next best thing?

no monitors? next best thing... Well...as previously stated...nothing will be better than monitors. They give a response that is 'flat' such that all the frequencies sound the same more or less. If you can't spend the 4-5 hundred bucks on a fairly good monitor pair...then there are a few...

    Help! (Beginner here...)

compression Hey Andrew...I think I finally have the concept of compression under wraps, so i'll try to explain it...since that is a potential fix for your bass. First, listen to the entire bass track and see what the maximum level is. (Say at one point the bass guitar hits 3db) Also, pay...

A mastering engineer said this... do you agree

interesting... I wonder what people would think if the 'digital' sound was the first style to record with...and then analog came along...I wonder if you would then have a bunch of recording engineers that swore by the cleanliness of digital... it might just be what people are still so used to...

    mic preamp or compressor?

prices I just bought and RNP and it was around 475. Thats the pre-amp (2 channels). The RNC (compressor) is around 180 bucks. I'll let you all know of the improvements I hear with the RNP.

    mic preamp or compressor?

thanks darwin One other question with the pre-amp.....i assume you still use it for mics like an sm57 that don't need phantom power to drive them right?

    mic preamp or compressor?

thanks thanks! Any input as to which would be better to purchase first? I would guess that the RNP should be the first thing to buy since I have at least some ability for compression in the post recording stage...does that sound right?

    mic preamp or compressor?

I'm looking to add some outboard hardware to my home recording studio. Currently I use an Alesis studio 12R mixer in concert with the gadget labs wave8/24 soundcard. I do all my mixing and post-processing using Vegas Audio. Does anyone know if the benefits of an outboard compressor (like the...

    This Guy's Pissed.

loudness I think the culprit of the loudness issue was Nirvana crashing into the airwaves with their explosive choruses. Nirvana definately had dynamics to their music...but I think the record label people determined that the loud 'Teen Spirit' anthem was everything...and from that point...

what plug ins should I use?

what did you say? If you are after loud...well...a limiter is simple enough to use and will definately make things louder without going over a set db level. But, you will lose any dynamics in the recording. Using a compressor with auto-gain will also give you a similiar effect...if not the...

    please critique, 1st submission

ziggy! Someone call Bowie and tell him we found his stand-in!!! Song sounds great....I dig the drums....very soft and subtle....but they keep it all rolling. Really a nice song.

Does low frequency content lower your headroom? Why?

FRONT WINDSHIELDS!!! wow!! Sheeesh c9-2001....I hope you were hiding in a bunker as you tested this dynamic weapon!!! As for breaking the front windshield....I'm guessing that it broke from the actual car frame distorting under the low frequency loading....? Actually no...I take that back...its...

    sonic foundry track compressor

over compress Well...what the compressor is doing is 'evening' out the sound level....as you compress more and more....you approach having all levels below whatever threshold level you set. However, when you have to compress a lot....you can also end up with some strange effects to the original...

    sonic foundry track compressor

vocals and compression Well...I'm surely no pro, however, i think the most important thing is to get the vocals to be 'seated' right in your mix....not necessarily at 0 db 100%. Usually, the only time I use compression with vocals is if there are some exceptionally loud bursts that need to be...
