New Tune: Home Away from Home (Rock/Alternative/Punk/Indie)

Well that’s encouraging. What practice do you recommend? Just repetition? Or something a little more organized? Honestly I’d rather practice playing drums than get into programming drums. I’m not against blending in sampled drum hits to add something that’s missing. I generally try to record...

New Tune: Home Away from Home (Rock/Alternative/Punk/Indie)

I did struggle with separating the guitars. Probably need to re-record with a different tone? Any ideas on the drums? I’m not great at playing, recording, or mixing drums…so I’d love to hear your thoughts. Also, not a chance I’ll ever sing much better! Oh well!

I increased the volume of the speaking part. Still a little hard to understand, but it helped. Thanks!

New Tune: Home Away from Home (Rock/Alternative/Punk/Indie)

I was on the fence about that exact thing. I have heard many songs that do this kind of thing, and they are kind of quiet so I was going for that…but I think you’re right. Thanks!

New Tune: Home Away from Home (Rock/Alternative/Punk/Indie)

Just whipped up this crazy tune yesterday and today. It’s about not wanting to go into an old folks home. Thanks for any feedback you’re willing to offer! Lyrics: Home away from home Now the sun is setting Happens every day It is so upsetting as As it turns to gray Home away from home Fall...

New Original Tune: To My Friends (Soft Punk)

Thanks! Tell me more about the limiter/mids thing. Never heard about that. Are you talking about the limiter on the master? I let it barely touch the mix. Or just all the compression on all the vocals? And the mids increase? So much to learn.

New Original Tune: To My Friends (Soft Punk)

I generally agree and definitely understand what you’re saying! I usually write songs that have short intros and jump right into the vocals. I specifically wrote this one as a departure for the middle of my band’s set, not as a radio tune. We’re not a drawn out “jammy” band. Everything is...

    Manslick - NSFW - the F word - beware

Nice! Lyrics are hilarious. Please tell me you didn’t use AI for this! I like the chord changes. I agree with what’s been said, rein in the wide variation in vocal volume with automation and compression. Other than that, let it ride. No need to polish something this crazy!

@BTStudio @RFR @dobro @Papanate @K-dub et al. Ok, so I tried to clean it up even more. Balance L and R guitar levels. Not as bassy (too aggressive bass cut?); feels cleaner and more in line with mixes of this genre. I present to you…Mix 6

New Original Tune: To My Friends (Soft Punk)

Awesome, thank you! Such an important point about which reference track I’m aiming for. I like that you looked up the Ramones! Here’s one of the reference tracks I like to use for this genre. Mine is definitely more bassy. Maybe split the difference? Jason Livermore’s mixes are awesome! Band...

New Original Tune: To My Friends (Soft Punk)

Thank you. I wrote this with live performance in mind, as a little instrumental break between songs. Kind of fun to have some longer instrumental sections. Also, I’m a big Cure fan so a long intro every now and then is great in my opinion!

New Original Tune: To My Friends (Soft Punk)

Great points. I always choose different guitar amps for each rhythm guitar take. One has more bite than the other. I should probably adjust the EQ a bit to be a little closer to each other, in addition to adjusting the volumes. Excellent thought about the drum level/automation. I’ll take care...

New Original Tune: To My Friends (Soft Punk)

@RFR @dobro Awesome, thanks! I did what everyone told me to do…less effects, adjust volumes on vocals and guitars. I also EQ’d most of the nasty hihat from the snare mic. I’m having a really hard time judging the low end. I feel the low end is a bit overpowering on the AirPods and in my truck...

@BTStudio @RFR @dobro @Papanate Ok fellas, tried to incorporate the changes you suggested. If I threw something off please let me know!

That’s two votes for less effect and more vocal level. I’ll see what I can do in the morning. Thank you!

“Punky but not derivative” …well said! “Light and shade” You should write music reviews!

I really appreciate the compliments. It was a fun one. I’m a sucker for finding just the right harmonics and if I could only have one effect the rest of my life it would be delay! And I’ll inch up the volume on that guitar, thanks!

Thanks! I’ll jump back in and make those adjustments. Much appreciated feedback as always from the BTS!

Don’t want to crush your spirit, but I think this might only be the second greatest composition in history. I can’t remember the name of the other one but it was a little better than yours. Sorry.

New Original Tune: To My Friends (Soft Punk)

Thanks! I agree with the clicky…assuming you mean the hats. I don’t know if I positioned my snare mic poorly, but I got more hi hat bleed than usual. So when I EQ’d the snare to add a little more pop/crack it brings out the nasty hi hat click. I tried to find the best balance and favored the...
