    Personal story about tape joy

Do you guys think I just need to level-up my ADA converters? Presonus should do it justice but maybe it’s time for me to invest in better converters. Would upgraded converters be more transparent and preserve the vibe of my mixes? Maybe I rustled a hornets nest and I’m slowly backing away with...

Every Track On My 388 Monitors, Except 2

I think what he is suggesting is this: you’ll see wires inside that connect from one spot to another spot with these little plastic clips. If you wiggle those clips you’ll knock loose dust or corrosion and restore the connection. Maybe even one got jostled loose from vibration over the years...

    Personal story about tape joy

I’m 40, and have been a hobby recordist for 25 years. I began with stereo cassette decks and RadioShack microphones, recording my band in the garage. Then in 2005 I upgraded to a MacBook Pro, Presonus Firepod and a couple budget microphones. I recorded digitally for years. I noticed that I...

Help identifying a strange capacitor, Korg Stage Echo SE-500

you’re the best! No problems. It’s just sooo old and it looks like it’s falling apart so I figured I’d better put a new one in there.

Help identifying a strange capacitor, Korg Stage Echo SE-500

Hi! I’m the new owner of a Korg Stage Echo se-500. There’s a filter cap right where the AC line goes into the unit. I am confused by its markings. Any help? I want to replace it because I doubt it’s doing its job anymore. The schematic says .033 uF, voltage not listed. Can someone tell me...

Tascam 244 4 Track is mirroring each track onto the other. Hints?

Nevermind you all were useless. Ha, just teasing. THE CORRECT SOLUTION is that the faders are like an ARM button (more like a send-this-tape-track-onto-my-New-Armed-Track-button) while using Sync Mode. Any tape track (1-4) on the Tascam 244 with a Fader up will print onto your new overdubs...

MX 5050 no Rew or FF

Is there a way to get some DEOXIT into the ff/rw switches? I have the Otari MX 5050 and the 2to4 track switch was blackened with gunk, blocking multiple channels.

Tascam 488 for "tape sound" or "analog mix"?

This response was so vivid of a story it made the subscription cost of homerecording .com worth it. Thanks for the no hype description of living with analog for many years! I still believe the semi random orientation of magnetic iron particles is a better way to record an audio wave...

    Tascam M3500 Noise Floor SOLVED

Update #3: I began pulling all my cables out from the Tascam M-3500. I had some RCA cables plugged into the Stereo Out outputs, these weren’t connected to anything. When I removed them, the buzzing stopped. Strange, so even though these are outputs, they introduce a buzz on the audio if an...

    Tascam M3500 Noise Floor SOLVED

I needed to post on update, today the noise is back with a vengeance. It’s gone if I switch to 2-track recorder input or Extension input. The noise does not appear on the main bus outputs, fortunately. I’ll have to do process of elimination, unplugging everything until the noise stops...

    Tascam M3500 Noise Floor SOLVED

My M3500 was having a strange 60 cycle buzz, like a ground loop, but only on the monitor/studio outputs. The stereo outputs sound quiet. This problem is reported elsewhere, along with the problem of generally high noise floor, including hiss. I lifted up the effects return, aux, switches...

Anyone love the 70's and vinyl ?

There’s something about vinyl records recorded and mixed with the intention of going to vinyl. Led Zeppelin’s Houses of the Holy sounds amazing on my Pioneer PL-10.

Guidance calibrating Tascam MS-16 for ATR tape

Thanks Rob! I’ll grab a trimmer and replace it, maybe that’ll work. But I moved the amp card to channel 16 so it’s not used right now. Thank you for this information. And I did decide not to change the calibration to +9. I’ll just hit the tape harder to see if I can get farther above the...

Guidance calibrating Tascam MS-16 for ATR tape

Hold on, this means that 10khz now comes out as -20 VU. Perhaps I broke a component I installed from the 30 IPS to 15 IPS modification. I’m really thinking I have to buy a new amp card now. Bummer. Is there a replaceable component responsible for high frequencies in the amp card?

Guidance calibrating Tascam MS-16 for ATR tape

While I was adjusting BIAS for channel 12 of 16, the VU meter suddenly dropped from +2 to -20. Now it won’t go above -20. Im worried I just destroyed my BIAS amplifier module. I’m blaming myself for not using a plastic screwdriver. I think I just took 5 years off my life from stress. I...

Guidance calibrating Tascam MS-16 for ATR tape

Hi helpful friends! I modified my Tascam MS-16 amp cards and speed to be 15ips. It’s now also modified to have additional bias current available. So I bought a reel of ATR master tape. My calibration tape is 250nWb/meter. If I want to get the most out the headroom for this ATR tape, how...

MS-16 30 to 15ips conversion (or vice versa)

Hi, I did complete this mod. The EQ was not crazy sounding before I calibrated it, so you can do the mod even before owning a calibration tape. I have used the machine 100 hours with zero issues. Great modification!!
