tascam 38 and m512: very quiet tape playback

i’m also using a samson patchbay, and i’ve tried the normal, half normal, and “middle” positions and it hasn’t effected sound. here’s a diagram of my patching scheme, as layed out in the m512 user manual. i’m only referring to the patching between the 8 track and the mixer, not the 2 track or...

tascam 38 and m512: very quiet tape playback

hey all, i’m finally learning how to use my tascam m512 board and the tascam 38 i acquired this summer. all is good with the board, there’s some scratches and screeches as i exercise the flows and work the thing like it probably hasn’t been in 10 years, but whenever i record to tape using...

    Post Your Analog Recordings Here...

also, here’s a recording i did with a local band (it’s funny, i’m 18 and they’re 16-17 so not much of a difference) a few hours ago. it’s cool to be a more known local kid who makes music, cuz i can hit up other kids i know and get to the point where i’m basically becoming their producer. it’s...

    Post Your Analog Recordings Here...

thanks! what do you recommend when using tascam eq? i try to get the most out of the warm intimate format of cassette, while also trying to mask its low fidelity. i usually boost the highs quite a bit as well as the lows.

recommend me some affordable nice quality patch cables for a tascam 38 and a tascam m-512

also, this is unrelated, but how fragile are 38s? because i was moving it yesterday and i bumped it into my desk thinking the desk wasn’t where it actually was, so imagine the force you’d bring down the unit except it hits a wooden surface along the way. should i be worried about the possibility...

recommend me some affordable nice quality patch cables for a tascam 38 and a tascam m-512

Recommend me some affordable nice quality patch cables for a tascam 38 and a tascam m-512 hey all. so, it’s finally be realized! the next level of my home recording adventure, a tascam 38 and a big old tascam m-512 board. however, one very important component remains. the patch cables!!! does...

    tacsam m-30 or tascam m-512??

this is a sorta unrelated question to the main topic, but do you have a recommendation for replacement bulbs for the 512? i have noticed that more “well kept” tascam units feature a more orange glow to the VU meters, rather than yellow or white glows. and my 38 has this orangish attribute. i’d...

    tacsam m-30 or tascam m-512??

i’ve read a bit of your vast story with the tascam m-520, so i know you are well acquainted with those lines of mixers. maybe i worded it wrong, but i wanted to track to tape and mix via analog mixer, then digitize the final results, probably plugged through a limiter, for distribution to the...

    tacsam m-30 or tascam m-512??

hey all, i’ve got 2 mixers in my line of site, one of which i’ll want to use with a tascam 38. a pretty well kept tascam m-512 with 2 burnt out VU bulbs, local, for 450. and a well kept, however still yet unseen (seller is busy but has been very nice, even lowered price for me) m-30 mixer...

Tascam 244 4 Track is mirroring each track onto the other. Hints?

i overcame this issue early on in my analog journey around april this year. i made pleasing results while still having everything mirror each other, but i’m glad i was able to record songs for my friend as this was when i discovered how to isolate tracks. i told him he would basically be the...

    Post Your Analog Recordings Here...

curious to hear people’s opinion on my novice recordings right here. just used a tascam 244 with an alesis microverb 4 tape delay on guitars, with the same mxl 9000 mic on them and drums. single mic drum track, DI bass, and double tracked guitars without any metronome used. i actually tracked...

can someone recommend a patchbay for a tascam 38?

hey all, i’ve just acquired a tascam 38 reel to reel. i don’t have a mixer yet, i’ll have one in a few weeks. but i also wanna purchase a patchbay and some snakes so i can be all ready to record when it’s time. not even sure if it matters what patchbay i get, but does anyone have any...

tascam 244 cue panning: help me understand

i believe both? i’m not quite sure what the right names are. i am definitely talking about the tape cue panning, but i’m wondering how those work in conjunction with the main mixer pans and also the L R buss designation that’s given to the tracks. 1 and 3 are L, and 2 and 4 are R. am i supposed...

tascam 244 cue panning: help me understand

one of the things i’m still confused about regarding the 244 is the cue panning. when you pan 1 and 3 all the way to the right, you’ll end up with no signal. that’s fine, i won’t be doing that anyways. but is the goal to pan 1/3 left, and pan 2/4 right, and then record while the mixer pans are...

recording using a (non-DAW) digital recorder, but using an analog console?

i’d rather not use the computer too much, only when i’m finishing up and exporting everything to release. maybe do some final compression and limiting of everything. because i find that when i use stuff like that i can’t do repeatable things. i have too many options and i’m always wondering what...

recording using a (non-DAW) digital recorder, but using an analog console?

when i monitored myself when recording into a 244, before it even hit tape, the sound was very nice sounding and pleasant, and it had a very low level background “tsssss”. is that a product of the mixer? because if that sound is solely due to the console, and using a digital recorder will...

recording using a (non-DAW) digital recorder, but using an analog console?

i have a broken 4 track cassette, and i’m trying to expand to 8 tracks. eh, but i think i wanna keep with the analog stuff. it was a joy. it’s just a matter of not getting a dud who’s speed will crap out in a month. there’s a great feeling of satisfaction i get recording the analog way, it makes...

recording using a (non-DAW) digital recorder, but using an analog console?

i’d like to move to more tracks, so 8 and above is what i’m looking for. i’m just wondering if it’s tape that is giving “that sound”, or if it’s the use of analog consoles that color the sound more. is tape just the subtle “film” that’s put over music?

recording using a (non-DAW) digital recorder, but using an analog console?

so i’m trying to upgrade my set up. i’ve used the cassette recorder, it broke, but my record is already digitized and i wanna move onto more tracks and get bigger sounds. and what i’m noticing as i’m researching analog gear is that the desks are way way more reliable than the recorder side of...
