Is there an objective means of determining the noise floor of a given track? I'd imagine one can look at meters, but I'm wondering if there's a plugin that provides a more accurate and quantifiable means.

I concur. I have a Dell M4800, and it's noisless almost all the time. The odd time fan kicks in it's just audible. It's been good to me. Can be had reasonably cheap.

After another long layoff I'm going to start recording again. I have some decent new preamps and I'd like to know whether I should set my Tascam input levels to -10dB or +4dB for them. Any advice would be appreciated.

So in theory, if I wanted to compress mid and side separately, I'd load one plug in set to mid, and another set to side?

I am trying to understand the function of the knob on the far left. It has settings for left/right, link, and lat/vert. I hear differences between these settings, but haven't found any description of what these various settings do. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
