Can an outboard limiter be easily integrated into a basic home studio for mastering?

Thanks for the reply. I have a chance to trade for a Manley Slam. I'm imagining it would be better than comp/limiter plugins.

Can an outboard limiter be easily integrated into a basic home studio for mastering?

I have a basic home studio, using Reaper, with several preamps running into a Tascam 16x08 interface. I have mastered all in the box, with acceptable results, but I'd like to know if it's viable for me to master using an outboard comp/limiter. I need a general idea of how I would route the mix...

What do these buttons do on this LA-2A plugin?

I have an LA-2A plugin from Ik Multimedia. It has buttons on the top right, but I have no idea what they do. The main ones that seem to affect the sound are L/R and M/S. I often find I prefer M/S, but I have no idea what they do and how, and I can't seem to find an instruction. Any insight would...

Is it plausible to have a mic pre that is more inherently noisy, but still sounds better?

Mic preamp quality seems to have two components, noise floor, and character. For those that have tried a lot of different pre's, is it possible to have a preamp that is more inherently noisy, and yet have it sound better in recording than say another pre that has a lower noise floor but less...

Objective means to determine noise floor on recordings?

Thanks for the reply Ed. What's your thoughts on Izotope RX9 Elements vs Standard? Do you think Elements is sufficient for most hum and hiss, or are there features of Standard that are better for those things?

Objective means to determine noise floor on recordings?

Is there an objective means of determining the noise floor of a given track? I'd imagine one can look at meters, but I'm wondering if there's a plugin that provides a more accurate and quantifiable means.

    Laptops for Home Recording: Advice

I concur. I have a Dell M4800, and it's noisless almost all the time. The odd time fan kicks in it's just audible. It's been good to me. Can be had reasonably cheap.

Tascam 16X08 - Inputs at -10dB or +4dB for good preamps?

After another long layoff I'm going to start recording again. I have some decent new preamps and I'd like to know whether I should set my Tascam input levels to -10dB or +4dB for them. Any advice would be appreciated.

Can someone explain this IK Multimedia Fairchild 670 style plug in control?

So in theory, if I wanted to compress mid and side separately, I'd load one plug in set to mid, and another set to side?

Can someone explain this IK Multimedia Fairchild 670 style plug in control?

I am trying to understand the function of the knob on the far left. It has settings for left/right, link, and lat/vert. I hear differences between these settings, but haven't found any description of what these various settings do. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Integrating AD/DA converters into an existing DAW and interface?

Thanks. My incorrect phrasing. I suppose I meant to say AD/DA connections that are not lightpipe.

Integrating AD/DA converters into an existing DAW and interface?

My new room sounds pretty good, and I've got two pairs of Tannoy Monitor Gold Dual Concentric speakers, 15" and 12", so I think I've got good monitoring too. But to be sure, ones budget will largely dictate new acquisitions. Only in the last few weeks have I been able to test two top end preamps...

Integrating AD/DA converters into an existing DAW and interface?

I remember asking a similar question somewhere a long time ago, but I'm not sure the answers stuck, because I'm still puzzled. I have a Tascam 16X08 interface, and Reaper, and I assume the Tascam has an AD/DA converter in it now. I've got my eye on the Universal Audio 4-710D, which has AD/DA...

    Opinions on pop filters?

I recently bought a pop screen, an Apex, which has two thin nylon layers in a circle frame. My first tests were ambiguous. I thought I heard some shaving of the high and perhaps less clarity, but I can't say for certain yet. There are other kinds on the market, including this much more expensive...

Recording bass with direct inputs on a good preamp?

Cool mic. Can you tell the story behind it?

Recording bass with direct inputs on a good preamp?

Thanks for all the replies. So, if I'm interpreting the bulk of answers correctly, there's generally some processing going on after the track is recorded.
