    Hey, Nick the Man....

You do video with Vegas, right? How are you capturing your video? I'm having sync issues!

    Don't you love it

when stuff works right on the first try? I know I do... So I hooked up my new digi video cam to my computer tonight. XP detected it, identified it, and was ready to roll. Vegas captured the video (and audio) with no problems. I love it when it's that easy!

    Violin

In a couple of weeks, I'll be recording a violin track for my steadiest client, and I'm wondering what others may have done in this situation. I have a decent variety of mics to try (though I'm thinking the first I'll hook up will be the MXL V69M), but I'm wondering how much capturing room tone...

    Hung

Here's a song by King Mixer, a local band I recently recorded and mixed. And mastered, against common sense and common practice. If you've read my "Mastering myself" thread, then this is the band I was talking about. http://www.lightningmp3.com/live/file.php?fid=3718

    Mastering myself

No, this is not some thread about est or Lifespring or any of that bullshit. I just finished recording and mixing a band. We are all quite pleased with how it has turned out so far, but now the band wants me to master it. I made sure to tell them more than once during the sessions about the...

    Feeling just a little smug....

I just saw yet another thread posted in the Cubase forum, and it reminded me that I don't see nearly as many "I'm having a problem" threads started here. I'm just saying is all.

    PITA but worth it.

I just wanted to reemphasize the importance of placement. I took me about an hour to get these overheads in place, but once I did the time seemed immaterial. And mind you, this is just for recording rehearsals! But while listening to playback, I hit the mono button, and no phase problems whatsoever.

    Got Irish?

At my job, I'm currently digitizing Joe Glazer/Collector Records masters. I came across this one the other day. I haven't seen an Irish reel in quite awhile........

    Is anyone going to try...

...the 57 mod in the new issue of TapeOp? I've boiled bass strings before, but never a microphone!

    I take it back....

Several months ago someone asked about using drum clips to record with. I was one of those who responded with, "Sure no problem." But I am here to tell you that I have seen the light and the error of my ways. Yesterday I set up my drums and mics, but used stands instead of clips, and the...

There doesn't seem to be much excitement here

about Acid 6, which marks the program's first mutitrack-capable version. And that includes me. Anyone else here not in a rush to upgrade? I'm currently up to version 5, though I still prefer to use 4, and I use Vegas for multitrack already.

    Trigger Happy mix 5

Here my latest mix of one of Jamie's new songs.

    Recording without a mixer

So on New Year's Eve day, my buddy and Blindfold cohort Darrel and I jammed out and as usual I recorded it. But this time I only used my external pres. This was not so much choice as necessity, because my mixer died on me a few days ago. I had already been recording my drums using my Octane and...

    Blown fuse

So my Mackie 1604 finally blew its original fuse after about 10 years. I picked up some new ones but discovered I got the worng ones. I need 1 amp but bought 2 amp. So the question is.... Can I use the 2 amp fuse safely, at least just for tonight? I can't imagine there's any serious problem...

    OK, Herm, since you asked...

I wish I could say it was done analog, but my 38 has been on the fritz for a couple of years and the computer has muscled its way in as the dominant machine. The songs you heard are demos taken from rehearsal. I record all our rehearsals multitrack despite the pain in the ass it is. We were all...

    Here's another one from Blindfold

I hope NL5 doesn't ban me for posting this cover of Young Lust!!!!!    Me on drums, bass, keyboards and production. Darrel on guitars and vocals. We did this just for fun.

    The more I use it...

... the more I like the V67. I'd been using it primarily for vocals, but lately I've used it on guitar cabs with very nice results. I also used it in conjuction with a CAD E300 for M-S micing an acoustic guitar - VERY nice sound. And just the other day I recorded tamborine with it. It's quite a...

At long last, a music post from me

I finally set up a SoundClick account and uploaded a song from Blindfold, my side project. Me on drums and production, Darrel on guitars and bass. Enjoy! http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=421511

    M-S placement

I've started experimenting with M-S micing using the M-Audio Octane. Here are some pics from last night's session. I was wondering how this placement looks to those who use this technique regularly. NOTE: The close-up of the mics (last pic) is where I ended up recording. The cardioid's...

    M-Audio Octane - thumbs up

Well I finally got a chance to put my Octane to work, and it's definitley a keeper. I first used it as a pre for my drums - M201 on snare, Beyer TG-X50 on kick, SM57s on all toms, MXL 603s for overheads). I took the outs of the Octane directly into my Layla. Well right off the bat the sound was...
