Help making bass guitar not seem "flat"

Okay so I showed a couple of people an early mix of a WIP on my album project. The first one said the bass guitar sounded like Midi, and the second said it sounded flat (not flat as in pitch, but in tone). I went back to the mix and realized that long long ago, when I first recorded the bass...

Trying to find Freeware Composing software

Not sure if this is the best sub-forum to ask this: Anyways, I write music by scoring instead of recording it via keyboard like most people do. I have always liked Cakewalk's score editor; however, I'm trying to transfer my scoring facilties from my aging old computer to my main recording rig...

Looking for Cheap or Free GM Modules

So traditionally I have composed music via score (I don't do keyboard midi recording) on my (now) old computer, using built in midi drivers. At first I used Anvil Studio, then when I bought my SB Live in 2001 it came with Cakewalk Express, and I used that. I was in love with the built in midi...

    Rhythm Section for 1st Movement

So I'm being a bit decadent and making a rock opera. I have the rhythm section for the first movement done (drums, bass, rhythm guitar, organ, and synth). Obviously no melodic elements yet, but otherwise, how does it sound? http://soundclick.com/share?songid=6690226

Anybody up for laying down some rhythm tracks?

(sorry, this is a repost from the Guitar forum, it was suggested I post over here as I may get more hits) Basically, the guitarist in my online band is being flaky...the other guitarist is showing me a few demos, but I want to try a few other things out. Basically, I have a rhythm guitar part...

Anybody up for laying down some rhythm tracks?

(I hope this is the right forum section....the classifieds looked like they were gear only) Basically, the guitarist in my online band is being flaky...the other guitarist is showing me a few demos, but I want to try a few other things out. Basically, I have a rhythm guitar part for my album...

    Online collaboration - Prog Rock

I play drums, I assembled it together from the files the other two guys sent me, and I mixed it. Enjoy! http://soundclick.com/share?songid=7134920

Not another "How to mic Acoustic Guitar"

So I have read up on tons of tricks recording acoustic guitar (close mic on 12th fret, far away one, etc.). I have never actually recorded acoustic guitar, and when I get my guy in to work on my album, I really won't have time to fiddle around much, so here's my question. So I have four...

    A good Reamper?

So my album has been put on hold due to a plethora of sketchy guitarists who don't know what they're doing. I've been playing in an online band recently, and one of the guitarists are interested in helping me with the album. They can record DI, send me the tracks, and I can just amp it up...

2-Channel Mic Preamps in $500-1000 ranged

Okay, so I have a Presonus Firestudio, thinking of setting up a 'gold channel', so I can have two good pres, for like drum overheads, vocals, overdubbing, etc. I've browsed through Musician's Friend and come across these two guys...

Changing up my drum sound, need opinions

So I've gotten some new mics recently, I got another SM57 a few weeks back and I got a Naiant X-M mic in yesterday. I decided to change up my standard 4 mic setup and go for something different. This first sample is VERY sloppy playing, so pardon that aspect, but its the regular 4 mic setup...

    I just got a Naiant X-M

I haven't really had time to use it on much, but I used it as a room mic for my drums and it sounds awesome! Just had to give my props!

    Mastering for Video Game Soundtracks

So I have been considering writing and recording some music for a computer game. Does anybody have any idea if there is a mastering standard or average for this? I'm planning on writing some prog rock stuff. Or is it just a matter of what sounds good?

Plugs or Programs to Determine RMS value?

So I know in some of the higher end programs, they come with an option that will tell you statistics of your track, one of them being the average RMS of the song. I use Cubase LE, I'm pretty sure it doesn't have this feature (or I have yet to find it). I use the Roger Nichols Inspector...

[Hard Rock] Spania - Final Release

    Remove DC Offset Non Functional?

I have Cubase LE. I try using the remove DC Offset function on my stereo mixdowns, but the function doesn't seem to actually do anything. Is there any particular reason for this? Now that I'm thinking about it, does doing it after Normalizing could be what is causing it not the work?

    Spania - Vocal-less mix

Here is my solo project I'm working on. I'm primarily a drummer, I play keys and I've been learning bass this summer. I'm a terrible vocalist, and have yet to nail a half-decent take. Regardless, can you guys check out this early mix of this song? It has been normalized to -0.2 db, otherwise...

    LDC on a bass amp

I'm thinking of experimenting with this idea. Take the dry DI bass signal out of my rig into a bass amp, then mic it from a distance with an LDC, in my case a Rode NT2-a. I tried this up close with an AKG D112 but the sound was close to identical. This will surely add room to the sound....has...

    Rhythm Guitar recording

Still working on bass tracks right now, but pretty soon I'll be laying down electric rhythm guitar for my album. Not sure the gear I'll be working with as far as guitar, but I'm pretty sure I'll be running it through an old MusicMan 65 watt amp, its very warm sounding with light drive. Now...
