I agree, the senn dynamic microphones are a tad more open than the shure SM57/58. I have a very very boring voice that's mid heavy, the mid bump on the SM58 did not work out too well for me, but if you have a different voice type that's higher/cleaner (female voices), I think it'll work better...

I don't know these mic but I prefer 1 over 2 since it seems to be a little more define.

the 960 was around 200? the V69 was 300, and this thing is 600, I think they look about the same.

the C3 is just a multi pattern C1, it'll sound slightly different due to the design with 2 capsule (most mic with multi patter will require 2 capsule I believe). So if you only need the cardioid pattern, then just get the C1 and save money. I think the T3 is recommended more over the C1/C3...

i'm not sure if the MPA go up to 3000, but normally mic with high impedance are not as good as the low ones. So when you dial your preamp to a higher impedance than the mic require it's still ok, just that sometimes it'll sound slightly difference.

the placement of the capsule in dynamic are normally different than condenser, with dynamic you usually just point the head toward the source, with condenser it's normally the face (basically you're just trying to get the sound to hit the capsule's face, that's about it).

the AT 3035 is about 110 shipped, I think that might be better on voices than the AT2020. PS: it comes with a shock mount. the AT2020 I've seen for 80 with shockmount included. Or grab a MXL 67i, it used to be on sale for 100 but now it's 150, check out that one and the MXL 9090, they're the...

I think the more appropriate question is how to set the attack/release time, how much to compress is quite easy, by simply looking at the curve of the sound file you can already tell how loud is the max and the min, then you can figure out an easy ratio. you just have to do research, there's alot of stuff going on with mic, some are "made in USA" but they uses china parts which essentially defeat the purpose haha.

the 990 is known to be "brittle" or as you describe it "harsh"... it just the characteristic of the mic itself. I haven't tried to use it for a long time but I'm thinking of plugging that sucka in for a test run again through my tube preamp and see if it can tame that high.
