unless you're using tube amps there may not be a serious reason to do it at all... most modern amps dont use hardly any power when at idle.... that said if ya want to power down go ahead... if it tends to pop yeah then ya want to turn it down first... as to order... think of it this way ...when powering up work towards the speakers... when shutting down work away from the speakers...
