samson mixpad 4 vs. art tube mp for mic preamp

i've only got a little money to spend so i have to choose. i'm using an sm58 to mic just about everything (vocals, instruments, cars outside), but a pre-amp would probably go a long way to improving my sound. i already have a 4 track mixer, but don't use it for recording, just for mixing outputs...

    Shure SM57 or SM58

there are various samson mics in the 100 buck range that are supposedly comparable or better than the sm5x. not sure about this myself.

i have the 4H; bought it about 6 or 7 years ago for around 110 bucks. it's an _okay_ mic, a little bright, more trebly than my sm58, but higher signal level for whatever reason. i don't use it for vocals, but do for acoustic guitar which it works well with.

if you're interested i tried putting a different rhythm on your track, just 11 seconds, took a drum'n'bass rhythm and slowed it down by about half and put some flanger on it. http://www.lovelorn.org/music it's called "fa.mp3"

nice sound; is it right that the bass sounds a little distorted and stereo expanded? bass sounds just right in its droning monotony but drums could use a little more variation and fill ins to accentuate the melodies played on to it, then eq the bass and snare up (cymbals are probably just right)...

    feedback on a track

thanks... it took me a while to get it right, but it seemed to work because the distorted guitar naturally sounds louder than the "smooth" sound which is heard just before it. also, i reverse recorded a guitar chord so that it crescendoed instead of faded. i thought it might help bridge the two...

    feedback on a track

i just put up a new track at my mp3.com site which i'm not totally satisfied with. it's called "friends?" and it's the first track at: http://www.mp3.com/usman i've been working on it for almost 4 months though and don't know quite where to take it. it has a kind of 70s soul sort of sound...

    Learn me some stuff...

really liked the feel and groove of the track and although you didn't ask for advice apart from bass line and levels i had one suggestion -- i think the chorus section needs more "warning" to it, some sort of build up resulting in the crescendo and split stereo of the chorus. one thing you could...
