samson mixpad 4 vs. art tube mp for mic preamp

i've only got a little money to spend so i have to choose. i'm using an sm58 to mic just about everything (vocals, instruments, cars outside), but a pre-amp would probably go a long way to improving my sound. i already have a 4 track mixer, but don't use it for recording, just for mixing outputs to my amps and speakers.
so..... what do you suggest would be better? getting the art tube mp for around 100 bucks, which has only one channel but which supposedly gives lovely tones to instruments when used as a direct box.... or the mixpad which is about 150 bucks and which gives me 2 pre-amps and mixer features (which aren't useful now but may well be in the future)? what is the sound like through the pre-amps of the samson? is it transparent or does it give some flavour, and if so is it a nice flavour? does it have the same inner workings as a mixpad 9 which is only a little more expensive?
any suggestions either way would be appreciated..... thanks
