I use a VS1680 with a Mackie SR24-4 mixer. This is *the* ultimate setup. Everything is totally smooth and flexible. In "jam" mode, you can use the VS with 2 FX cards as a super high quality 4 FX processor. In recording mode, you can send 8 inputs at a time to the VS.

jnorman,
why do you use a Mackie mixer with a VS?
I have a VS1680, and my only complaint has been the lack of XLR inputs (only 2) so I have to buy ART TubePacs to extend the range to 4.
What functionality do you gain in the process?

I'm having a hard time micing the snare. My setup is the following:
Shure SM 57 for snare
Shure SM81 x2 for overheads
The rest of the drum is electronic, so no need to mic.
The problem I have is that the overheads pick up the snare loud and clear, when I'd rather have an isolated snare track...
I am looking to start a company to develop new ways of distributing and creating music on the web. Financing is not a problem either, finding good programmers is.
I see that there are a lot of multi-track recording companies out there. I was wondering if anybody has a good sense of the...
Same experience here. I got this song with a nice acoustic base rythm.
I then added a Strat with massive stereo flanger/phaser + autoWah and tube pre-amp + small compression which gives the sort of rotating sound that Floyd uses in Dark Side of the Moon, or more recently some slow songs from...
I have a pair of TubPacs from ART. I have the same noise problem you're experiencing. I use one to compress a bass guitar, but I get a decent amount of noise with a gain level that gets me the highest peaks sporadically in the red zone of the tube.
I'm kinda surprised, but maybe that's what you...
I use a DP7 electronic pad Roland drum set. The other drummer
in the band also has the same unit in his apartment.
What I'm trying to do is to have him record his drum part, then
send me a file that I could play back and mix into the VS1680.
I see 2 alternatives:
1. he records the MIDI file...
Well... I went the VS1680. More precisely, I was 'forced' to as my wife surprised me by getting one for me for my birthday. In a sense, she made my life easier by making the decision for me.
Now, after 3 weeks of using it, at first, I disliked very much the small black & white screen, but... I...
regarding tmcbrinn answer, I got the following question:
How do you apply a noise gate to multiple microphones at once? Do you need one gate per mic? The VS1680 can only insert one gate, not multiple?
What's the trick?
I have the FX expansion modules in my 1680, which includes a noise gate. However, you can only use the effect by inserting it in the mic line that needs the gate. Unlike other effects such as delay or reverb where you can use the effect send/return bus.
This is fine except that you can only gate...
Does anybody know how to most accurately reproduce the lead guitar sound from "Comfortably Numb" in Pink Floyd "The Wall"?
What about the lead sound from "Shine on you crazy diamond" from "Wish you were here"?
Are there any cool lead guitarist links where sound FX are discussed?

I use the Neumann for vocals, not the Marshalls. But even when tracking the vocals alone, the mic picks up even the rumble of the power supply of the VS1680. If I only track one channel at a time, then I'm OK as I don't need the noise gate for anything else, so Insert works. However, if I'm...
After a lot of studying, I'm purchased the VS1680. Great integrated unit, but I really don't like the display or the user interface which is a little clumsy.
So I'm considering 2 alternatives:
1. Spend an extra 250$ and buy Datasonics VS Pro Studio which would provide a better interface on a PC...
What is the easiest way to put a noise gate on 3 mic inputs of a VS1680. I use the 2 XLR inputs for SM57 used to mic 2 Marshall in stereo. The 3rd mic is a Neumann TL103 through tube preamp + compression.
The problem is that the Marshalls have noise, and the Neumann picks up even steps of my...
