    Fig 8 Drum Room Mic

I think this is the best way to look at it. If you are set on using this type of mic for room sound in your space as pictured, don’t approach it conventionally. Instead, think of it as an effect and smash it with compression, EQ, etc to see what cool sounds you can pull out it if to enhance the...

    Going DAW-less

I realize this is an old thread but I wanted to share something, if you’ll all indulge me. Years ago, I came across a quote from the painter Henri Matisse, who is claimed to have said “Much of the beauty in art comes from the struggle a painter has with his brush.” This got me thinking about...

    ducking vs unmasking

Dynamic EQ is correct. There are lots of plugins that do this these days… Basically, it like a signal analyzer and multiband compressor sidechained to an EQ. It applies an inverse EQ curve after analysing the sidechain signal to duck conflicting frequencies.

Catching that 60s and 70s vibe

Thank you! I’m excited to really get started. Just tracked some drum parts in there a couple of hours ago… used some gobos to help with reflections. Sounds decent already but it’ll sound a lot better after I get some stuff up on the walls next weekend.

Catching that 60s and 70s vibe

Yep! That’s exactly the plan. Really want to be able to just turn the lights and computer on, hit record and go with whatever instruments and vocalists are in the room. I’m assuming these cubicle walls you’ve got are 6’ high? I was thinking that 4’ high might accomplish what we need insofar as...

Catching that 60s and 70s vibe

This room is definitely broke haha. The reflections in the place are awful and that 13x10 space at the back is a bass trap, in the literal sense. Something has to be done about it. I’ve been making recordings for a long time and I know what I’m after, hence the gobos and the upcoming acoustic...

Catching that 60s and 70s vibe

Ooh! That’s interesting. I hadn’t thought about changing the shape of the ceiling! As you can see in my photos, it currently has a drop ceiling… I bet I could build some semi-cylindrical panels to hang in place of some of the tiles for diffusion

Catching that 60s and 70s vibe

Hi everyone. It’s been a while since I’ve been to the forum… glad to see it’s still kicking! I’m in the midst of building a studio. I’ve got just under 800 sq ft with 9ft ceilings, laminate flooring and a mostly rectangular shape. I’m doing what I can with baffling and such and plan to use a...

High Pass ITB or at source?

Smearing and various other types of changes to the tone, often due to the resultant hump that happens at the frequency corner when using steeper slopes. The problem can get worse when one applies different HPFs to multiple tracks in a mix. I haven't the vocabulary to detail it in a way that...

High Pass ITB or at source?

No, you can't do that with your tone controls, as your 'bass' knob is most likely either a shelving EQ or a wide Q FVM/bandaxall-style tone stack (unless you're using a Mesa head or something similar that has a built-in HPF) and using that to try to remove sub frequencies will suck all the...

High Pass ITB or at source?

I feel like you didn't read the OP. I know that HPF on everything is a bad idea. I know that whatever I capture is what I've got to work with. And I know that trial and error is ultimately how I'll figure this out for myself. The question again, is: How does HPF at the source differ from HPF...

High Pass ITB or at source?

Any number of reasons, as dictated by the needs of the song. One quick example would be to reduce the amount of unnecessary low frequency content that is generated by the act of playing the bass guitar. This is evidenced by the cone excursion on a bass cab, which is easy to see if you look at a...

High Pass ITB or at source?

I meant 'tape' figuratively. I'm actually recording into a DAW and everything is done in the box once the source gets there. Sorry for the confusion. Gain staging isn't a problem for me... If I were to use actual tape, I'd probably track things like drums or bass to it to try to get some...

High Pass ITB or at source?

Hi all, I realize that slapping a high pass on everything is, generally, a bad idea. It can cause phasing issues in the low end, leading to a mix that sounds wonky down low. This said, I'm wondering how applying an HPF at the source might differ? For example, if I were to apply an HPF to the...
