What's the final word on the Masterlink?

I have one, and for the few things I know how to do, I like it. But I'm sure not getting the most out of it. You can dial in a lot of stuff -- if you know WHAT to dial in. Unfortunately, I don't know enough about what I'm doing with the DSP to get the most out of it. What it needs (IMO)...

    Masterlink any good?

It's a great box The only problem with the Masterlink is that if you don't know how to apply compression/limiting etc, there's nothing available that's gonna teach you. You just have to stab your way around in the dark. If you KNOW what you're doing, it's a very simple matter to dial things...

How much does an analog casette tape compress a signal?

Can someone tell me what's going on here? I have sent the same mix from my board to both an analog Maxell Cassette (in a $100 Sony tape deck), and to a CD burner. (No DSP) The cassette sounds better. It's louder, punchier, and fuller-sounding than the same mix on CD. The signal went from...

    Masterlink users (newbie question)

AEL Thanks, man. When you say: What part of the Masterlink are you referring to? When I say Dinosaur Rock, think Black Sabbath, Deep Purple etc. Heavy guitar riffs, drums like cannons --explosive music. However my stuff is also guitar instrumental -- kind of like Jeff Beck or Joe...

    Masterlink users (newbie question)

AEL: I know it's effective. And I know when it's OFF or ON. It ain't the Masterlink -- it's ME. I don't know what the hell I'm doing! :D I don't know how to HEAR what's going on. I currently only hear at "musician level," not at "engineer level." I've burned a CD with 5...

I will finally share some secrets about mixing!

Lotsa great stuff here. Thanks, Ed! I'm not an engineer, but rather a longtime guitarist who's only gotten into home recording in the last two years. (I think there are a LOT of us musicians who ONLY got interested in things since the advent of cheap, digital, home recording -- so for us...

Your favorite Compressing/limiting tips/tricks for finishing touches on the final mix

Igormeister Igormeister, thanks! This is the kind of stuff that helps! More of this kind of post is most welcome! You can be sure I'll be trying these ideas out. BTW, I'm doing punchy, heavy guitar-oriented Dinosaur Rock.

Your favorite Compressing/limiting tips/tricks for finishing touches on the final mix

Dom Thanks, Dom How much of the singnal do you grab during compression (threshold)? What kind of compression settings do you use? ---- To all: I understand there are no hard fast rules for this, but if I could even narrow it down to setting "ranges" -- i.e. even if it's in general terms...

Your favorite Compressing/limiting tips/tricks for finishing touches on the final mix

I have experience with compressing single instruments/tracks during the recording process (which is gernerally less subtle). What I don't have is experience for putting the "finishing touches" on a final mix of all the instruments. The kind of thing that makes the finished product sound a bit...

    Masterlink users (newbie question)

I understand -- But aren't there some guidelines for such things? Places to start?

Your favorite Compressing/limiting tips/tricks for finishing touches on the final mix

Got an Alesis Masterlink and the ability to add compression and look-ahead limiter to my final mix. and I have no real idea where to begin. What kind of settings should I try?

    Masterlink users (newbie question)

I'm doing punchy, heavy guitar-oriented Dinosaur Rock. What kind of settings should I be using for compression and or limiting for that professional-sounding "finishing touch"? (generally speaking) Note: I'm not trying to "fix" anything that sounds bad. What should I set the threshold at...

Where can I get an RCA jack switchbox?

BigKahuna Kind of, but I need it to be RCA jack ins and outs. I think those are for bare wire (as it says: "Accepts up to 14 gauge wire.") I need L& R inputs and 2-4 sets of L&R outputs with a switch.
