I have a Delta1010 and was using it happily for many years. Unfortunately they are not compatible with Intel Macs so when I upgraded my computer I also bought into MOTU - fantastic gear. Get yourself an interface with the PCI-e board and you can expand your Ins/Outs as you need to in the future...

A jack lead from the left channel out of the mackie to the portastudio's input should work. Just watch the levels going into the tape deck. Yes, you can saturate tape a little for a nice gritty sound, but if it is too distorted it will just sound atrocious. Might as well have all channels in...

LOL! I forgot to give an update - it was a momentary glitch with Logic. When I loaded the same session back up again with the same Aux sends in place it worked perfectly.

Hmmm.... I think that the answer is "it doesn't matter as long as it works for the song". I just took a listen to Adele's "Rolling in the deep" and the lead vocal gets noticeably louder as the song progresses. This might just be a production decision to have this song ramp up during the course...
