    Dynamic ($400) vs Condensor ($400)

for your price range the SM7b is by far and away the best option you have. the condensors you'll be looking at will be fine and flattering but will pick the room and the neighbours et cetera. If you want a coloured sound go for a condensor, if you want the best vocal mic for your budget go for...

Robust, 'budget' condensers for mobile recording?

How about an iPod and the blue Mikey? has anybody used these? it's cheap (if you already have an iPod) and is definately portable.

Are people still reading the "How does diaphragm size/polar pattern relate" thread?

not averse to the generic "best LDC-under 2 dollars" kind of posts when i first arrived here i know think that in order to start a thread in the microphone forum you should have to take a test on the contents of the BIG THREAD and achieve a passing score.. somewhere around 10% .. ;) because...

    need to reduce noise

use the Line input of your soundcard.. the pre-amp should bring the mic level signal up to line level.. it should get rid of the noise

New to recording, setting up basic studio need some advice

good advice all around... the JM-27's are another cheap option for SDC's i picked a pair up on ebay for about €50. basically, get whatever mics you decide upon, read a modicum of theory (Harvey's Big Thread) and start recording. You will have a lot of problems but a pairs of SDC's will start...

getting a vocal mic as a gift.......need help!

I think instead of a new microphone you should maybe get a pre-amp... the sm57 will sound a thousand times better than it probably does now... anyway without a pre-amp/ mixer you won't be able to use a condensor mic unless you have some other method of supplying phantom power... maybe it's not...
