For us poor guys out there recording and mixing

voice is not an issue at all. That said, your panning is bizarre through in ears I'm listening on. Two guitars both panned hard mess with my head! it sort of flips left and right. Better on speakers, but too much. There is wierd splashy sound at the end of the harmony vocal and about 2:49 is that chord deliberately clashy? It never does it again? I quite like it!

Hmm, many mixers only mix in LRC (Left, right, center) so I don't understand the guitar panning part. I agree about the clashing chord as this was never meant to be a song when I first started recording it, I was testing out the amp-in-closet thing and only decided to make a song later, so when I recorded the guitars first I didn't practice it or anything, i just made it up as I went, meaning when I recorded the 2nd guitar I couldn't remember what I had done in the first guitar track, lol

I think the sound at the end was just the keys, or I am not understanding what you are referring to. or, could it have been compressor letting go at the end raising feedback? I may have used a slow Varimu plug that had a slow release is the only other thing I can think of.

More on the panned guitars, I do recall listening to Lou Reed's song Paranoia Key of E, and those guitars seemed panned pretty hard left and right. Without tracks panned 100 percent right and left to compare to, I can't imagine being able to tell if the guitars are 100 percent or 9 percent panned. But I love the panning in this Lou Reed song, though he has no clashing chord, lol. Do these guitars effect you in the same way? This is what I was listening to at the time trying to get this type of guitar sound. No doubt I could find a thousand such songs with guitars panned hard left and right and yet not the same parts to do the wall-of-sound thing. I do recall mixing in phones because I am in my small bedroom, so maybe I need to refernce to speakers as well.

I have begun using an amp and mic instead of guitar sims a couple years ago, but it sucks too because I only have a small closet2 and I have packing blankets surrounding the mic. Any mix tips are welcome, and sorry about my singing voice, I hate it myself, lol.

Kind of got a bit of a Stones Vibe - your vocals are really locked in to me got a Lou Reed/Mick Jagger thing going on - except the backing vocals go off the rails- you’ve got to decide on what you are going to play on the guitar - then the mix you think you want - you’ve got a style of guitar - but it’s not complimentry to each other - and more dynamics on the Drums and Bass - with a bit of tweaking you’ll be right there.

The hard panning on the guitars messes up the mix.

The left guitar is following the keys.. the right is following the vocal. I would experiment by panning the keys right and the vocal left - not much, somewhere in the 10-20 range. Maybe more if it doesn't sound too out of place. I like the groove and the vocal.

Ooooh - we got us a good season right here in the mp3 forum.

'Ain't got no Pultec EQ'

Don't care bout no hard pan. Too busy singing along.

You don't need my help.

I think you have a great voice! Especially the way you harmonize, they blend together very well.

If you brought the jangly / busy guitar in the right channel, back in the mix a bit, and perhaps not so far right, it would make it a bit less distracting. Possibly
move the keyboard to the right, in its place. The left side guitar sounds fine to me. The right guitar is a bit too bright / thin IMO, possibly a little EQ on the high end might fix it.

Enjoyed the song.

After listening a bit to the Lou Reed song, I kinda get what you are after (and I think you are really close). You need to improve the sound of the right guitar, so it is not
so bright / piercing. However you accomplish that, either by re-tracking / eq etc. So my suggestion of moving the keyboard there instead, is not a good one, now that I understand better what you are going for.

Lot of great tips and thoughts, thanks much. I normally just do more simple bluesy stuff and as I had said, Reed doing that guitar thing had captivated me at the time to experiment.
lol, yeah, I do the just recording off the top of my head only to experiment with recording sounds and such, seems like I do that more than anything. Here are a couple of mine that are probably more normal for me.

Very Cool song ! You voice is perfect for this. I especially like she short chorus sections when all the vox comes in.
As far as the guitar panning mentioned above , I've found I can get a more immersive and wider sounding mix by Not using hard panning. There is something about it that doesn't let any reverb or delay on the track go past the "outside" of the instrument itself. It's like it's hitting a wall that absorbs the sound. Yes L/R/C has been used extensively in the past . I liked it then on most normal playback systems but I think mixing and mastering has now greatly improved. I For Sure Enjoyed this song and it's subject matter.. mark

I Think your singing voice sounds good, and Low End Crowd was pretty cool, good vibe. A song about gear you have or don't etc.... I agree with the other comments on the guitar panning. I've never really like the sound I get hard panned, and generally use about 80% left and right.

haha nice. I like the vocals. mix sounds find to me and I like hard panned guitars in call and response like this. I wish this song had more serious lyrics though. Low end crowd as an analogy for down and out/blue collar people. really deserves less niche lyrics. I really like this song

The Beatles even 'gentlerised' their equipment constrained hard panning. For them it became an effect I think. When stereo first came to the public, I was pulling cables and setting up mics for big band sessions and a few actually separated the band with a big gap between the woodwind and the brass section, with drums, bass and solos in the middle. My dad bought one of the records and with his new stereo, he had one speaker in the front room and the other in the back room. The big band doo-whaps sounded most odd. flip flopping between rooms. The front room had saxophones, the other room had the brass section. wierd! I see the album has now been remastered and sounds normal now.

I like your voice and guitar sounds. The hard panned guitars don't bother me but I would like to hear the reverb/delay in the other channel. Record the reverb/delay only on a separate track and experiment with panning.

The hard panning doesn't bother me, but I can still see what other people are saying. The guitar parts on each side are kind of ping-ponging back and forth. So the combination of LCR with the parts you're playing might be distracting to some people.

The guitars sound great. The vocals sound great. Backing vocals have a bit too much reverb for me.

Low end is at a great level. Bass tone is nice.

Snare is a bit muffled. The guitars are pretty bright, so the snare seems dull in comparison.

First of all, I like the Low End theme. That’s sweet, and perfect for the forum! I do have a Martin Acoustic, but I had a crappy acoustic for 20 years before that…can I still be in the crowd? lol!

I don’t mind the guitar panning, but I like listening to guitars. If I was super focused on the vocals (great by the way) I might be a little distracted. I think it’s only an issue with headphones. In a room with speakers it would sound more like a band, so that’s cool if that’s what you’re going for!

Great performances. Real drums? Sounded great!

That was good. I didn't find panning offensive.
It was all the same though. I was hoping Carlos Santana would come in somewhere with a great lead solo, for contrast.
