Mixing?

Why does mixing take so long? What do engineers do? Let's say that he recorded a band:
Lead guitar, rythm guitar, drums, bass, vocals, synth.

What does he do with the tracks?
 
That's a really broad question. The answer really depends on how everything was recorded and what the finished product needs to be.

It's kind of like asking "how long is a piece of string?"

BTW, mixing doesn't necessarily take all that long. That also depends on how it was recorded and what the final result should be.

I kind of need to know what kind of effects and stuff they use. Like eq, compressor,... Let's say for drums! If they were played off time, you have to fix it! You also eq drums, compress them, and what then? Is that it? I'm just confused

First off. Mixing starts with the recording process. You're already talking about "fixing" bad performances.

No offense to your current abilities, but you have quite a lot to learn.

Study, study, study. There are stickies in almost every subforum. Read them.

There are basic recording and mixing "how to" videos all over youtube. Watch, learn and practice.

People on this forum can be very helpful, but don't expect anyone to hold your hand and walk you through it all.


Learn, practice experiment. You gotta put in the work

Do this, get in to it some, then you have more specific things to ask.
We chip away at it (answers/subjects more 'bite size and work out better) Rinse - repeat..
