The New Tone Thread

That's why I just rolled with it. The JVM does behave more like your DSL than my other amps do.

I didn't really try to copy any tone or anything. I just fired up the amp and hit record. If you wanna nail *that* tone, I think the P-90 would be a good thing going into a high gain amp. A hot humbucker would be good going into a mild amp. It's just manipulating gear and characteristics to get the results you want.

Half of that "For Those About to Rock" lick is Malcolm, and half is Angus, so getting one close means the other will be off because their own tones are so different. And I did it with a pick. I'm pretty sure that lick is finger picked when they do it.

After I posted I thought what I should've said was, one sounds a little more like Angus ('bucker), & the other (P-90) sounds more like Malcolm...And I knew you weren't trying to nail that sound, but it is damn close on the first whack man....

I've learned so much about guitar tone from this thread it's mind boggling. Looking back at when I first started with a real amp, my tones were atrocious...

Rami: It's all good, there ain't no right or wrong here in the Tone Thread dude....

Yup, saw that this morning. Sucks, but I don't wanna see them anymore anyway. No Malcolm, No Phil Rudd? No thanks. And now no Brian Johnson? Hell no.

Just watch that entire River Plate concert. That's them at their last high point. That was the final high water mark of their career, and it's pretty bad ass.

Finally having a good day over here guys, talkin' toans, I don't have to worry myself to death about being able to pay the bills/eat/live, or work anymore, & havin' some fuckin' pepperoni pizza...:).

Lol. That can't be good for the ol ticker. :D

I got an old Line 6 wireless unit from a friend of mine. Two transmitters, two receivers. All lame. There's something inherently douchey about nobody guitar players like me using wireless systems, but fuck it. I'm a douche. Not that I need it. I don't move from my spot on stage. Not enough to warrant a wireless anyway. But if there's something to jump onto, I will do it, so this will help with that. I almost strangled the singer with my cable last time I sprung into action.

Ah, fuck it dude, there are things I'm "not supposed" to eat but I do anyway. I'm such a picky eater, I'd fuckin' starve if I followed everything I've been told to eat/not to eat since all this shit splattered everywhere...

I've always heard the Line 6 wireless thingies are good, a couple guys in the Marshall forum that gig regularly swear by 'em. One of those guys is in an Ozzy tribute band called "The Land of Ozz", & they kick ass. Very, very authentic sounding, & the singer even looks like Ozzy...lol...But again, I've hear those wireless systems are pretty good dude...

I'd loved to have saw that man...:).

Here's a promo thing for an upcoming gig they have:

The guitar players are father/son, the dad's the member in the forum & seems pretty cool. Check out his 17 year old kid playing some Randy Rhoads licks, he's great already, & if he sticks with he could really be a force to be reckoned with in a few years on the guitar....

IIRC, the dad plays through a Line 6 amp/cabs, but his son plays through a JCM800 & Marshall cabs....I think they're a really good band from the vids I've saw of 'em...

minermaniac, here's some basic humbucker vs P-90 clips using the same amp, settings, cab, mic, blah blah. Same everything. Similar SGs - one being a fancy Angus sig model, the other being an SG Special with a P-90. The neck is beefier on the Special, but they're both regular Gibson SGs otherwise.

Marshall JVM - OD1 Green
Bass - 6
Mid - 4
Treb - 6.5
Presence - 5
Resonance - 0
Gain - 3
Ch vol - 6
Master vol - 5
Marshall 1960A 4x12 - Celestion G12-65
Shure SM57 on axis, 1" off grill, just outside dustcap.

Gibson Angus Young SG with Angus signature humbucker

Gibson SG Special Gregburst with P-90 bridge

The more I hear those Angus Young pickups, the more I like them. They're hot, but not crazy. Nice highs and lows on them. It's just kind of a "more of everything" sound. The P90 sounds great through that amp too, but next to the AY pickups I can hear their narrower range and lower output. I'd bet that the AY pickups have less practical application and the P90 would drop into a mix more easily. But damn...soloed, I love those AY pickups.

AC/DC was here in KC last week. I wish I'd known, I'd like to see them live. Apparently the next day they had to cancel a string of shows due to the singer developing hearing problems. And I came to learn that Malcom doesn't tour with the band any more. And, of course, the drummer isn't exactly free to move about the world right now either...

personally I liked the P90s better ..... more articulate to my ears.

well .... as far as I can tell .... I'm about in a coma .... 14 gigs in 11 days .... 8 down .... 6 to go.

Sorry to hear about your friend Bob...

14 gigs in 11 days??? Wow dude, you definitely stay busy, be sure you rest up whenever ya can dude....

Man, I can't believe Potliquor has such an extensive wiki page. Being from Louisiana, I've heard the name, knew they were a famous local band, but I never would have imagined they'd have that kind of story.

yeah ..... and they were a bad ass band.
All pretty nice guys ..... the first guitar player, Les Wallace was my earliest recollection of anyone around BR using a Les Paul/Marshall stack.
I have all their albums on vinyl .... there's some good stuff and some dreck.
But they figured largely in my earliest years of figuring out this music thing.

Okay minerdude, Tadpui, and anyone else that may care...here's another hot Angus Young humbucker vs P-90 clip. This one's a little more revealing through an amp that reacts to these kinds of things a little better.

So again, Gibson Angus Young signature SG vs Gibson SG Special with a P-90.

Marshall Plexi 1959SLP

Mid - 4

SG Angus humbucker

SG Special P-90

See if you recognize the first little riff. :D
The second part is a Johnny Thunders song.

Thanks yet again dude for the P-90/'bucker comparisons...You know, I figured I hear quite a difference with a different amp, but these sound pretty close to those JVM clips yesterday...I mean, yeah, I can tell there's something a little different about 'em, but dude those JVM clips yesterday were just smokin'...Don't get me wrong, these are good too, but those yesterday were epic...

I like the 'bucker for those little double-stops/single note lines, but the P-90 better for power chords....Guess the lead-ish stuff has more gain/sustain, & the P-90/chord stuff has more clarity...I'm getting a better idea of what I'd be getting into now, I mean I kinda knew but these clips give me a definite heads up on 'em....

I kinda recognize it, but can't place it man...Let the cat outta the bag....

Checked the nice, P-90 with binding online today, & it's already gone dude...:(.there's another one just like it, but it looks scratched/used quite a bit worse than the first one...That's ok though, there's tons of 'em out there, believe it or not, I almost bought one today, but had to resist, I can't dip into what I've funds I've got for a while or I won't be eatin' anymore pizza for a while...Goddammit it's hard to keep myself from pulling the trigger....:laughings:.

Oh yeah, "what do you say" to me when I write a shitty song, record it shitty, program my drums shitty, mix it shitty & then ask your opinion dude???? :D

I thought that was hilarious, I'd been watching that thread for a little while today, & pretty much knew what was gonna happen if you replied...:laughings:.
