The New Tone Thread

Probably the first tone I've posted recording with my amp at a decent volume - not completely full on, about 1/2 way on the master - I'm sure its loud enough to annoy my neighbours carers. It certainly sounded loud in the room when I took my headphones off. Went a bit modal madness in the middle but oh well. Was fun at the time. Bit wah wah crazy at the end too. Had to sim all the lead work as its getting later here now.

I liked that - had a nice Pixies feel to it. I would like a bit more cut to it myself, but a good sound nontheless.

Cheers, dude. Was planning on finishing it off this weekend sorting out the lead and adding some vocals. Surf has been fucking pumping though.

That's just the voice of the amp. I notice it with all Blackstars and it's why I personally don't care for them. It has this murky gain character that I just don't get along with. I like smoother, tighter lows and more grunt in the mids and highs - ala Marshall. It's just my preference. Doesn't mean anything.

You are not alone in your opinion Greg, other people have stated that Bs are "dark" (but there ARE a lot of lovers!) . The HT-20 is perhaps the worst of the bunch for this voicing but there is a "fix" from no less than the amp's designer himself! If you have one put an EQ pedal in the FX loop. A boost of about 6dB at 2-3kHz is suggested, obviously have a play. Also the amp's general tone benefits from a general overall boost of a few dB in the loop so as to drive the PI a tad harder.

The Rocket 50 is also not THE most startling speaker Celestion ever made and I think the amp might benefit from the mid range bite of a V30?

Can I get a bit spammy and tell you all that Blackstar are demoing a new amp next week? See their website Guitar Amplifiers, Valve Guitar Amps, Guitar Pedals | Blackstar Amplification

Dave.

It definitely does sound better through a v30. I've tried the HT20 head though a v30 loaded orange cab.

My son's 20 head runs thru' a Greenback (55Hz jobbie) loaded into an old HiWatt 12" combo cab. He is happy with that (well, was before he buggered off to France!) but then he is more into jazz these days than rock.

Hey tonethreaders...my buddy just willingly bought a chinese "Chibson". It looks like a 59. I think he paid about 230 bucks for it. Lol. I'm gonna check it out thursday and report back. I'm very eager to see how this thing stacks up to a real one.

I'm sure after he replaces the pots, pickups, switch, and nut, and has a fret job done it will play ok.

I think he also bought a cheap Studio with a broken headstock to swipe the hardware and pickups off of it.

I saw some Epi LPs on sale for like $390.....

I'd be intrigued to see how good he can make a "Chibson" look and play. If you can get a few pics of it before and after so we can a) see what bits are shite and b) see what can be done about them.

I've seen pics of it. It looks fine from what I can tell. He bought it "relic'd" and he's a painter himself so he plans to give it his own treatment. Unless the body shape is wrong or something, the looks aren't usually a problem on most Chibsons. I've read that many of them are made by workers in Epiphone factories using Gibson headstocks. I don't know how true that is, but it seems plausible that asian slave workers would make some fakes for side money. I'm more concerned with playability and stuff. I can't imagine it has a good fretjob and shit. I'll have it hand tomorrow, so I'll report back with pics and review.

yeah ...... I'm curious about that.

It's not impossible it's a decent git.

As an example ........ I have to assume the Guitar Fetish stuff is made in China because of the prices.
And their stuff is outstanding for the price.

I bought a thinline tele from them because it was a blem (which I never found) and red metalflake ............. I wanted a beach guitar I wouldn't care about for git-destroying beach gigs.

I liked it so much it became my primary guitar for a year or two until I got the Stinnett.

And I've since built a standard tele outta their parts .... have some of their pedals ..... have their p'ups in one of my strats.
It's not custom shop stuff but pretty amazing for the prices ............ so i'm not ruling out that the Chibson could be ok.

In other news ...... erg .... I have to learn a dozen or so SRV tunes for tomorrow for a place I'm just starting at and they want a bunch of SRV.
I only do 3 of his tunes and that's not enough.
Gotta go to Kissimmee today to tune a piano and that's 2 hours each way so I'll listen to it all the way there and back and then tonight sequence up all the tunes and run them a few times.

Stevie WAS a great guitarist but the blues is boring as hell .... the only SRV songs that interest me are his covers ...... his own stuff is that I IV V repetitious blues structure that makes me want to beat on my head with sundry items.
At least it'll be easy to learn them all since they mostly share the same 3 chords and SRVs licks are mostly simple too ..... he did have amazing speed though, when he turned it on ..... so that part will be challenging.

I'll learn a bunch of his licks so I can cop his style and I'll finally be able to play a bunch of it when asked so I guess it's a good thing but I just have little interest in the blues.

Hey guys, the walking dead is here for a few today trying to catch up....

I've got my "portable" rig with me, my Lester, small laptop, interface & external hdd, & I actually started messing with a song last night. The big thing I was worried about was the interface working on W8, but so far, so good. It sucks because I have to save it all to the external hdd, but fuck, at least I can play/mess around with this shit a little, & it's kinda opened my eyes that this minimal setup is probably just as good as my desktop rig, just a lot less powerful, which really, in turn will make me commit to sounds faster, which is probably a good thing....Plus I only have like 2 Toontrack libraries installed on this thing, so I don't mindlessly go through drum sounds, I'll try to concentrate on the song more, or hope to anyway....

No amps with me, I'm using ampsims for now, but again, at least I can play/fuck around with it. I'm back up in the holler with my Mom, don't need to be staying by myself, & it's boring as fuck here, so the little lappy setup is definitely cool...

I'll try to upload some of those ampsim clips this evening just for shits-n-giggles....

Health-wise, I feel like shit today, this is the worst day I've had since I got out of the hospital last week, & hope it's just "one of those days". I'm keeping up on my meds, & doin' what I'm supposed/not supposed to here....Haven't had a smoke in a week now, & it actually hasn't been that bad honestly. I just can't believe the barrage of meds I'm on now, it's unreal, a handful every morning as soon as my feet hit the floor. I go for a 5 min walk twice a day, & next week I'm gonna try to just do 10 minutes at a whack (doc's orders), so we'll see I suppose....

Thanks for all the kind words & support guys, I'm literally all on my own, other than my Mom, & honestly, she's not able to chase after me, so we're kinda taking care of each other up here in the holler....

Sounds like you're hanging in there with the recovery....and no smoking.
I'm sure your docs can tell you better...but it will most likely take some time for you to start feeling normal health-wise.

If you were closer......but hang in there and keep in touch through HR.

Yeah keep chipping away at it miner. A week of no smoking has done more good for you than you might realize. You're essentially detoxing on top of all the other health shit you got going on. Just keep it up dude. One day at a time. We're all pulling for you. :guitar:

I never really got the fascination with blues. I know it's the building block for my beloved rock and roll, but straight blues does nothing for me. And Texas blues/rock like SRV or ZZ Top just makes me angry. :laughings:

But I'm sure you'll kill it. Hell, I can almost play some blues. You could probably do it in your sleep.

you know I've never been that much of a SRV fan but I listened to him for 5 hours today so here is a review of him from fresh ears .........

First off ..... Stevie was a terrific git player ...... really good with a wide vocabulary .... you can listen to stuff he did with say, Bowie to know he wasn't limited to blues but that does seem to have been his big love.
But he was really impressive and blindingly fast.
I'm not talking shred-fast where you use a lot of tricks to reach that speed ...... I'm talking scales and runs freakishly fast.
I heard a lot of Hendrix in his playing and the speed reminded me a lot of early Johnny Winter ........ just blazingly fast.

His singing ..... he apparently had a range of 4 or 5 notes ...... :D

His songs and arrangements were as simple as it's possible to be ..... no variety in a song .... the only things he played that had much arranging were his covers of other people songs.
But his stuff was pretty meh as far as songwriting goes ...... someone like Robert Cray is far more adventurous..

I came away impressed by his chops so that's something I hadn't felt before.
I would have liked to hear him on some good music ..... too bad he died before we got to hear that.
But very much of his music sounded like a blues jam.

I listened enough .... I'll sit down tonight and work up a bunch of his licks and go get that gig tomorrow ...... won't be able to play his fastest stuff but I should get close in the 90 minutes I'm gonna give myself to work it up.
