I've gotten to where if I use a head I sit it on foam to isolate it from cab vibrations. One time I had a Marshall 50 watter and the bass player shoved his cab up against it and the vibrations immediately ruined the power tubes ...... you could actually hear it go from nice to a bad distortion within the space of a song.
I also put a 8 inch fan blowing on all my guitar amps so they stay cool to the touch.

I be's obsessive ..... :D
 
Thanks for the tips Bob! I have a soldering iron, a station from Weller, I believe (I can't bear to look at it right now out of shame). I've tried to keep it tinned but I'm still green at this. I settled on a heat setting of 4 out of 5. 3 wouldn't melt this solder.

The solder I bought for my eventual pickup change is 60/40 tin/lead, but the solder that came with this ill-fated kit is mostly tin with a bit of copper.

I'll try again tomorrow and see if I can improve any with these tips in mind.

And that's a good suggestion about the foam between the cab and head. I have some spare mopads that I could put there. Worth a try.

And Greg, good point about supporting that sagging board. !maybe that's contributing to the problem.
 
I'm reading & learning re soldering. I'm REALLY bad at it but haven't been shown/taught/done a tutorial so my natural impatience and thickness does for me every time. I might try now I've read this stuff Lt Bob & Greg.
Gents, here's the latest mix of an older song. New guitar solo and tweaked vocals.
Does the solo tone work well with the rhythm guitars?
 

New kit & premade tube amp (15 - 25 w dep on tube sets) from Italy.
With a set of relays that are based on vintage - modern amps that can be selected by smart phone or midi BUT the circuits are analogue.
2 channel head - (ch1 - vintage ch 2 - modern) is about 1000 euros they reckon.

use the 60/40 .... and if it's not rosin core ..... get some rosin core instead.
It really makes a difference.

or just don't even set the head on the cab at all just to see if it will make a difference.

That PCB look distinctly tarnished. Get a PCB cleaning block and cleanup the pads then wipe with a de greaser such as meths or ISOPROPA then solder IMMEDIATELY.

If you cannot find a PCB block use the finest wire wool you can find but be gentle! De grease as before.

There ARE some very good Pbfree solders but they contain silver and are a bit more expensive. You still need a hotter iron than for 60/40 and are still not quite as easy to use.

I can't remember his name, but I love that dude in the middle. His demo/reviews are in-depth, fairly honest, and I love his sense of humor.
 
This is a new one, its the emulated out from my amp going straight into REAPER with no extras added. Personally, I think it sounds pretty shit, but could be handy for getting a few ideas down in some situations. I don't think it sounds simmy as such, just badly recorded.

Sounds far darker and muddier than it did in the room or even in my headphones. This was recorded with the master on the amp on zero!

It also doesn't seem to catch your playing dynamics like you would expect either, some of my lead playing on this I would expect to clean up almost completely, but it all sounds like a 90s distortion pedal on low battery until I roll the volume off an coil tap. I also bend a string on my guitar till it drops completely out of tune!

doesn't really sound muddy to me and I just got back from a gig so my highs are gonna be limited and it still has a nice bite for the rhythm parts ..... sounds pretty nasty for the leads though.

im breaking in some new cans (3rd set in a month!) cant comment on the mix,but it seems the vocals are a tad loud and the guitars could benefit from a lil top end ..

but its a great fooking song,love the vocal style :D

You're right Bob, muddy isn't the right word. I think it just sounds shite. I think it would only have very limited applications.

I kinda liked it for the chunky rhythm sounds ..... but for lead it was horrible indeed.

Thanks. That's been the case since I acquired a new interface.
Sounds fine in the comp & monitor set up even on headphones but out side the box there's a lack of high end. I
I suppose I should look at the MP3 converter I use first of all.
 
I'll give a listen to the tones later tonight. Right now I'm actually feeling very accomplished. After thoroughly ruining my first soldering kit, I finally got the hang of soldering and started making joints that looked good. So i started the 2nd kit and finished it this morning. And it actually works! So i got brave and busted out the Les Paul and the BB Pro pickups. Operation Tone Patrol was a success! The new pickups are installed and functional. I still need to get the heights fine tuned for balance, but II like the way they sound. Great but not excellent, about what i expected. Give me a few days to dial them in and I'll post some tones here.

Congrats on figuring out soldering. It aint so bad, right? Looking forward to hearing those pickups through that 2204. :)
