an acoustic offering: "Pura Vida"

The acoustics sound great!
The lowest bass note (around 1:43) was a little loud compared to the rest. I'd say cut out the first 6 seconds of the song, it sounds like 'all the players' warming up before the song starts. Jump right into the in-synch stuff.

That first six seconds gives it a great live feel (sorry, Mike). Great vocals! Very Yes. The acoustics could be brought in just a touch...too wide...makes them distract from the scene. Cool solo! This is some great song, here! Very early prog.
There's a constant hiss. A bit of LF mud. Otherwise, great mix.

thanks mjb...

those acoustics are all my Taylor 414.

and yea, this was kind of a live recording,
"'all the players' warming up before the song starts"

no click, no guide track,
i basically started the count off by voice,
and just followed my own groove.

i had to have the count out,
just to know where i was when i knew i'd go back and overdub another rhythm, and the lead and harmony guitars....
so it really was 'warming up'....

and then when i was done, i ended up liking it like it was, just left it honest

lovely clear tone! great track, I love the taylor guitars, very sweet sound with no harshness

Outstanding !! I enjoyed listening to this. Very Yes / Steven Stills / CSN groove. The guitar sounds perfect. Nice resonance, and all the little harmonics and such sit clean and clear. I like the live feel of the song. Great mix to boot. Really nice job.

Are you still mixing this 12 years later?

This at least the 5th time you've posted this tune...2003, 2008, 2011, 2013 and now.

I'm sorry, but I just don't get it. Why isn't this stuff in the Marketing Forum where it belongs?

VERY 1969 - but that's a good thing.
Heat,
Gonzo is a forever tinkerer & revisiter.

no, i've only mixed this once,
thanks for your concern miser.

this summer i will be re-mixing,
for the first time,
my entire first album, for digital release.

the record company that i signed with at the time (Planet Records) went tits up.
alas, the album is no longer available.

i've always wanted to give this a more modern mix, and bring up drums and bass, basically,
i've just completely changed my mixing process since then.

so, miser,

there you have it.

you seem awfully troubled by my attempts at furthering myself,
it almost seems...

personal.

and i cannot imagine why the bother?

miser-

i would add this:

hopefully, there are NEW folks here,
who haven't heard this song before,

now is their chance.

they might have a new insight for me.
who knows.

also,
i'm working on 10 brand new tunes right now,
some of which are acoustic.

could be, that a comment now, might influence a new mix decision on a new tune.

I haven't heard this before and it's pretty good. I liked it. Thought it was cool :thumbs up:

HI BROKEN,
yes, leaving that opening section was to introduce the listener directly to the vibe of the moment...
in that, the session was totally in the moment...
kind of off the cuff, un-rehearsed......

as far as panning, i like the panning as is,
i used a bunch of classic recordings (such as zep's going to california, csn&y's stuff, etc) and they did the hard panning...
i guess on the next version, i'll play with bringing them in more with some centered mono reverb, or something like that....
actually, the dry ambient tracks sound pretty cool on their own, maybe i'll bring the pan in like you say,
like at 50% and 50% left and right....
that may be separated enough with NO fx......

the hiss is just the ambience of the room, and the hotness of the mic...
i'm ok with the hiss, makes it a bit more organic, and less stuffy studio wise.....

thanks btyre!
for commenting, and checking it out...
yes, the taylors can be tricky to mic, because of their massive low end....
but find the right spot for the mic, and dial out the bottom, and it's good.

Honestly, I was thinking 75-80 on the panning, just a bit in. It really does sound nice!

Kind of funny, that you start with I like it as is and end with maybe I'll bring the pan in like you say. Interesting how we play things in our minds and think them through as we type. I do that all the time! :)

ALRIGHT PHIL!

i figured there were more people here now, than way back when i first posted this....
glad you liked it!

i'm still getting good feedback here and elsewhere, that i will be taking into the complete re-mix session.
this should be fun!

i've been on the fence about LCR mixing..
i've used it, and it has worked really well.

and so much of the stuff i like to listen to, harkens back to early to mid 70's rock, and they used a LOT of LCR...

maybe i'm just not hip enough to figure out how to do it properly...
but when i study it, it seems hard panned mono tracks,
and then maybe a reverb send panned hard to the other side...

sometimes i'll play with the in-between pan positions (like you suggest) and sometimes it just sits right, right there.....
even tho it mostly makes sense that if you are mixing for someone listening out of stereo speakers,
and not lap tops and ear buds,
that the hard panning sounds best.
