Hi all. Newbie here to home recording.

If I use a device like the focusrite scarlett 18i8 (Scarlett 18i8 | Focusrite), when I go to windows' list of recording devices, will all 18 of the input channel be listed separately under recording devices?

Z recording devices list.webp

My aim is to stream 4 channels of audio using shoutcast or icecast (also something I'm new at) in my LAN at work.

My RME Fireface shows with a number of different recording and input options, however they're all in stereo pairs, not individual channels.

Nope. Not likely. You need to open the driver for the Scarlett in a DAW to see them. Windows only cares about the driver, not what it does.

I suppose every driver is different but... I must ask-why would you care?

Just curious.

Thanks for the response. Basically, I have 4 analog audio sources I need to send over IP from a central location to 4 different locations in my LAN.

Ideally I use this RedNet 1 | Focusrite, but I am budget constrained.

So I figure I could get a much cheaper usb multichannel soundcard, plug my 4 players into it, stream the audio over the LAN (with shoutcast, icecast or VLC doing the streaming) and use the existing PC at the endpoint to receive and playback the stream.

The question is, can shoutcast/vlc/icecast see each individual input from the soundcard (ie the focusrite scarlett 6i6) and broadcast them separately......

My Tascam 1641 always just shows as a single Line In.

Further research seems to indicate that "The proprietary ASIO interface ... is also usually the best way of making multi-channel recordings on Windows." ASIO Audio Interface - Audacity Wiki.

So maybe if a device has ASIO drivers, windows/shoutcast can see the multiple inputs on the device.

Are you using an ASIO driver for your tascam 1641.
"Tascam US-1641 ... reported that only 2 channels available in Audacity with 2.xx drivers under Windows 7 but 16 channels available using older drivers under XP." Multichannel Recording - Audacity Wiki

Aswp, what devices at the destinations are going to play the 4 discrete tracks?

The standard OnBoardSound in computers is only 2 channels although you can buy cheap 5.1 PCI cards.
Dolby 5.1 is also passed down S/PDIF but I am not sure how you would send that over a LAN?

ESI make some budget multi in, multi out USB interfaces, pretty basic, no level controls.

Dave.

Each source is mono analog, and each endpoint will receive a mono stream which will be decoded by winamp or VLC and played back over the audio system.

Now I am TOTALLY banjaxed!

Best of.

Dave.

Does it need to be done via computer or could you use a four bus digital send from, say, an X AIR device? Can send multiple outs via LAN cable. Just need an iPhone or Android device...
