Lol. Awesome.

I've heard and read those Norlin 70s LPs referred to as pancake bodies. You can see it in pics. It's like two slabs of mahogany with a thin layer of mahogany or maple in the middle. Necks were made of whatever they had laying around. Don't ask me why they did it like that. They also had a volute on the back of the headstock. Purists hate those guitars, but tons of legendary players played those things. Ace, Randy Rhoads, Jimmy Page, they all had Norlin era Les Pauls.
oh, then that's what it was. It was definitely two slabs of mahogony making up the body with a maple top and I do remember there seemed to be a thin piece of wood between the two slabs although that part of the body wasn't coming apart ..... just the top.
Cool ......!

Yeah sounds like you had a Norlin. Pretty cool to me. I'd be tickled pink to have an actual 70s Norlin LP. I'm not one of the cork sniffers that thinks everything made after 1959 is garbage. :laughings:

Jonny: Don't you hate that shit man??? That's a lot of coin for a guitar, but it was a Custom, right??? Just the tag "Custom" adds a lot to the price usually...How's the JCM800 doing dude???

If you think that a LP Standard costs £2,000 now, it was probably a pretty good price (it was around 2009) - I suppose it could have been 2nd hand. A new Custom will cost you £3,000 here now.

I screwed the new speakers into my 2x12 tonight. It's too late to break out a 100W Marshall right now - I'm going to try and find a little time tomorrow to find out just how loud it is.

Yeah man, Gibsons are pretty damn expensive, or to me they are anyway....My LP Studio cost me around $1000, but you can buy the exact same guitar now for about $150-200 less...Mine's the 2014 Studio in desert burst...While it doesn't have the binding/bells/whistles the higher-end models do, it's still a Lester, & to me, it plays/sounds great...Probably one of the best guitars I've ever owned...

Cool man, just remember it'll take a few hours to break them in...at first they'll feel/sound a little stiff (mine were for a while anyway), so the more you can play through 'em the better they'll get...You should have a kick-ass setup with the JCM800 & new speakers dude, congrats!!!!

Cool - you lucked out on the Studio. I tried one out and it was rubbish, that was the day I bought the 2nd hand LP Traditional, which just felt quality to me, so I bought it there and then. Being a leftie is pretty lame - there's usually just one or two guitars to try - e.g. the day I tried the Studio, I could have tried out 10 or more right handed ones and maybe found a good one.

---------- Update ----------

A JCM 800 will break those fuckers in in no time.

Lol, hopefully. I usually play in bursts when I find a day or two to record something. That's why my playing just gets worse and worse.

Yep, my 2 new speakers are finally broken in (or I think anyway....lol), it's just took me a little while...since being off work they have gotten quite a bit more use though...:D.

Dude I was scared to death the Lester I'd bought was gonna be a dud...I bought it online, without even seeing it in person, much less playing it...Seems I did get lucky as I've heard about lots of Gibsons (even the higher-end models) being shitty...I really like my LP though, fuck for all I know it could be a piece of shit compared to others, but I like it myself, & I suppose that's all that counts...:).

Studios might be the worst for hit-or-miss quality. I've played what I think are some really nice ones, and some are like WTF? All Gibsons can be spotty, but the higher end stuff is usually more consistent. Usually. I've seen some really shitty Standards too. Score one point for Fender. They're almost always pretty good....for a Fender. Yuck.

Yeah dude, I remember talking with you about all that before I pulled the trigger on my LP...I was honestly pretty nervous because it might be a dud, but again, I like it...It's became my main guitar since I got it, I hardly ever play anything else, the Ibanez is tucked away in a case in the closet..lol

And at £2,000 you'd expect a good quality instrument. It's a crappy thing to do to people, putting out rubbish product at that sort of price. The Studio I tried out looked great, but it played like shit and sounded bad. I bet a good player could have made it sound good, but a good player I am not!

So here's some pics:

My new speakers installed in my 2x12 (a G12-65 and a G12H-75 creamback):

And my "other amps" stack (from the bottom - Egnater 1x12 (V30), the Plexi clone I built (AmpMaker PP1800), JVM1H, JCM1H, Vox NT-15H):

I tried out the JCM800 with the new speakers in the 2x12. It's very fucking loud! It's fine in the iso box, though. At 6 on the master volume, it's similar in noise level to the 18W plexi clone at full tilt. Push it up to 8 and it jumps to another level altogether. It's an acceptable daytime level (just), but definitely not when the youngun is napping.

I was a bit disappointed with the sound at first, but as the tubes warmed up it started to sound wonderfully awesome. I played with a couple of mic positions with my SM57 and got a decent sound from the bridge pickup. The neck pickup was pretty fizzy sounding, but I improved it a bit with the position changes. I'll try and record a bit for you all when I can - I already took too much time off my school work to do all this!

I've retracked the lead intro -(5W Kustom H5 at 12 o'clock , Marshall 4x12 -cheap 2010 cab & speakers- 57 & l' Grange dynamic mics.) it was only a guide/suggestion recording but decided to do something with it as I was off work today. Double tracked the gtr (panned 50% L & 50% R) and there's a blend of 2 mics on each. The R version has a Boss SD1 with almost no drive (at about 1) but max;d level to get a different reaction from the amp.
Sadly this version has my guide vocals on it also.
They're awful - but that's OK as I know I can't sing: I just wanted to record my phrasing ideas.
Greg,
Yep, I know you've been off the recording stool for a while. As usual from my perspective it's a whenever & at your convenience thing in other words- No Worries. I'm just making changes to this thing as I hear them and seeking feedback.

Nice stack Johnny Deep - at least you have options.

Thanks! Yeah, mostly Marshall options, which isn't a bad thing. I'm thinking I can double track with plexi on one side and the JCM800 on the other for rhythm guitars. Going back to the plexi video Minerman posted a few pages ago, I really liked the sound of the 70s versions compared to the 60s ones - I'd like to get that sort of sound out of my plexi clone if I can - not sure if I need a mod to get there. I'll have to experiment when I get time.

I had a listen to your track there, Ray - sounded pretty good to me. I like the weird vocals you've got going on there. If you worked on the delivery a bit and mixed them to be more audible, I think they'd sound awesome.

Awesome stuff jonny. How do you think the JCM-1 voicing compares to the big mammy jammy 800? Do you notice that Creamback overpowering the 65?

Ray, that lead intro tone is way better than the last one. That'll work. You could maybe even bump the gain up a hair more if you want to.

The voicing sounds very close to me, but note that I'm listening through headphones as the 2x12 is in the iso box, so the sound of the box and the mic position will affect what I hear. I'll do a little comparison when I get round to recording a sample.

I did a test just now with my other half in the living room (which is where our house is joined to next door's) and me blasting some chords through the big amp and the volume from the iso box is fine with the master volume on 8 and the preamp on 3. Still not advisable at night, though.

rayc ........ I'm with greg ..... that sounds way mo' better! The lead does need to come up some though.
The vox ...... well, actually I can see them working in this song if mixed and fx'd right.

Nice tunage.

Jonny: Awesome setup dude, I'm glad you got the speakers in the cab, & it seems like the ISO box is gonna work for you....That's great man!!!! I'm curious to how the 1w JCM compares to the real thing too, I'd love to hear some comparison clips...I already know with my DSL's the big version is gonna push more air & probably sound bigger/meatier, but again, I'd really like to hear how your amps compare...

My DSL-1 does sound a lot like the DSL100, but it's still not quite there...

Ray: Sounds much better dude, & don't be so hard on yourself about your vocals, like Bob mentioned, if you had 'em up in the mix, with some eq/compression, they'd probably sound much better...

Thanks Miner. I should get a few minutes to record a quick comparison tomorrow.

Agree on Ray's vocals - I think they sound cool.
