Either the guitar or the verb on it or both, yeah. But a bright guitar's good on this one.

There's this other thing that's going on through my monitors - the vocal's panned a bit right, the guitar a bit left - and I'm perceiving the vocal to be lower down physically than the guitar which seems higher up in the air. I've seen this before, not on your stuff, but elsewhere. I asked an engineer how that happens and he said it was how things were EQ'ed. So maybe bright guitar = closer to the ceiling guitar?

Nice tune, man. You could add other instrumentation, but simple is good on this one.

Very, very airey. Like you can hear the room noise in the background on the guitar.
The voice is a lot mellower in comparison. I think that together they sound nice.
What happens with an acoustic that bright is that you start to hear the pick against the body of the guitar and the fingers moving on the strings. I don't mind it on an intimate tune like this.

Great harmony.

Thanks both! Good thoughts.

I did this with the stereo MXLs ... and eq'd them bright. Then I did a mirror part single AT4050 and panned it slight left ... and down in the mix. The guitar sounds really "sparkly" too me. I wondered if it was too bright ... or the "slightly different" guitar to the left was distracting.

Fixed mix on links ... just a bit less of the second guitar and more polish on the vocals.

Great harmonies! Good job all around. I do hear some room/air at the beginning, but nothing too bad. There is also a sound like around 2:30 that doesn't sound like it should be there in the background. Like a paper shuffle or something.

Hi there,
Vocals sound fine to me but the guitar is, indeed, a bit too bright.

I guess I'm listening to the updated mix? It's not making me cringe or anything like that, but I'd have the guitar warmer sounding.
The harmonies are really nice, but I'm not sure about the first few words when the harmony comes in for the first time at 1:30 ish.

Nice track. Thanks for sharing. :)

In the intro at :15-:16 there's some kind of breakup that sounds too driven. Really good tune. Like the play between the mellow vocal and the bright guitars.

Thanks! Listening back, I think I've got a little more eq to do on the main vocal, but I'm pretty sure I'm in the right neighborhood now. I'll look at what's causing the breakup. It might be string buzz.

Agreed ... little more tweaking needed.

It's me moving the guitar slightly and rustling my shirt. Great ears!

Try stereo mic'ing about a foot / foot and a half in front of the sound hole with one mic above and one below. I noticed that's pretty much the only way Tommy Emmanual does a setup for his videos. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0cHeNscKZN0

I haven't tried it...I've always gone left and right.....but you have to do something different. That sound isn't making it. :) ...and Tommy's most certainly is. It's a nice balance of playing artifacts and pure tone. I hear it all...his shirt, breathing, and pick noise...but it isn't wrecking it.

Yes the guitar is too bright. In fact, I think it has too much energy above 2200hz or so. That entire range seems hyped. It's bright, but it's also harsh.

Lead vocal sounds very nice. A bit dry.

Harmony vocal, especially on the left side, is swirly.

I can hear you moving in your chair at 2:04.

Yep. Guitars are definitely too bright. I'm also hearing some sort of warble throughout; sounds a lot bad youTube compression from back in the day. Do you have phase issues between the mics?
Are the hesitations in the guitar throughout intentional?

Sorry to pick this apart so much, but on a minimalist mix like this, everything tends to stick out.

Looks like a consensus is forming. I do have the upper end hyped a bit on eq ... so I'll try rolling that back first before retaping it. Funny how tape has nothing to do with it anymore, but the colloquialism still sticks.

Stu -- VERY interesting point on mic positions. Next one I do, I'm going to try that.

I've got a large condenser (AT4050) that can take the lower position, and then one of the MXL 603s small condensers can take the upper.

I'm not hearing phase issues ... but I will look into it nonetheless. ... and yes, the pauses are intentional.

Thanks ALL!

I thought it came out really nice sounding. Guitar too bright or not I think it works well. It's personal preference I guess.

edit...

I don't hear any warble or anything like other have mentioned, just the intro has some kind of static sound like a TV with no channel to connect to lol. It fades out quickly enough. Listening on crappy computer speaker though. :thumbs up:

Lol ... great ears, bud. It's my wife running the sink downstairs at the very beginning of the piece. I record under "challenging" conditions at the top of the stairway leading to the kitchen. :)

I did bring the top down quite a bit in the newest mix (now up), so I hope I've now got everything dialed in just right.

I hear that. I record in bad conditions as well. I have a room set up for recording, but it's a pain in the ass moving the computer, huge desk and everything back there. Not to mention there is a HUGE drum set back there that a guy I know brought over and left. There isn't much room now with the huge drum set. So, I just record in my living room and I struggle with birds chirping and motor vehicles driving by.

I try to get stay close enough to the mic that the sounds I'm making are louder than the birds chirping with out causing the proximity effect. Seems to work pretty good. I also bought one of these CAD vocal shields which really helped with getting a more focused and defined vocal. Bought it on sale for $69 dollars and it seems worth the money. :D

That's great stuff ... and the price, on sale, was too good to turn down.

I think it sounds quite a bit better now.

The guitar sounds a little boxy now, but not real bad. I'd probably leave it alone. I can still hear you moving at 2:03. Not sure if anything can be done with that. What kind of reverb are you using on the guitar? Something about it bugs me slightly, but I can't put my finger on it.

A VERY slight room verb ... BUT even as such, might account for the boxing out you hear. Room verbs tend to hollow the sound. I'll listen back with that in mind. Thanks bud!

The unit btw ... is "Breverb" which comes with Sonar native. It is my go to reverb unit. The hall sound is just incredible.
